A teenager who went to the same elem/middles school as my DD15, was killed on Friday on the train tracks.

He was "tagging" (grafitti), which obviously he shouldn't have been doing, but the tragedy of this is so huge I can't get my head around it. His mother was an Administrative Assistant at the school, who I saw nearly every day for six years. She's a single mom who absolutely adored her only child, and lived for him.

Hug your teens tightly, and maybe find a quiet moment to talk to them about how quickly and senselessly things can go from fun to awful.

How awful. Around here it may not be train tracks but similar tragedies occur with kids falling through thin ice in the winter or getting caught up in fast running creeks -- just senseless and needless tragedies where kids get plenty of education and warnings but they consider themselves invincible at a young age eh?

How horrible and tragic for this woman...

How absolutely tragic. I can only imagine how devasted that boys' mother must be now. I too, can't imagine anything worse than losing a child. My heart goes out to her.

How soul wrenching this must be for his mother. I cannot even imagine the pain she must be experiencing. I think we all read about tragic accidents with children, many that could have been prevented, our initial response is most likely to empathize with the family.

You are right we should all take a moment and thank God for our children.

The older mine get, the more I realize how very young 13 is!! They are so dang clueless and inexperienced at that age.

And the 14 yr old's comments-"died doing what he loved" Ugh-I'd like to smack her a good one but yes, again, young and inexperienced.

How tragic all around

I had the same thought when I read her comment. She's probably heard people say that - like about those mountain climbers who died recently - but doesn't realize how stupid and immature it sounds from a 14yo. All I can hope is that his mother doesn't read that or that the girl doesn't say it to the mom.

Having grieved several of my DD's friends in the past few months, I had to work so very hard over Christmas break not to hold on too tightly. But I did try to adopt one of the older ladies at church's viewpoint, as your kids are walking out the door:
1) tell them to be careful
2) tell them that you love them
3) tell them to have fun

She raised 7 children and those were always her last words to them as they were heading out (in that order)! I tried it over Christmas break and I must admit I did have a little more peace knowing that those things had been said.

You and the member of your community will be in my prayers.

I was very sorry to hear about this. That poor woman. I'll never understand why some people seem to have such hard knocks in life. There is absolutely nothing worse than this.
