I guess my kids are self motivated since it hasn't been an issue. I applaud your efforts in helping him. I dread helping my 5th grader with homework b/c I don't understand half of it. LOL!
Your ds sounds so like my ds. Yes, dh is helping with geometry, and me with world studies. The other 5, he's on his own. They start tomorrow-Friday. It's been such an ugly freshman year.
Is he very sensitive like our ds? Did he have one particular teacher that just shot his morale/self-confidence this year (in our case, geometry, who badgered him in front of the rest of the class constantly; he's too sensitive), which then trickled to all the other classes? That's what we're fighting (that, and he had mono for 6 or so months; teachers knew it but since he was in class, they did not lessen up on him).
Sue, I ready your post here and the other that you sent about the Senior not doing his work. If I may make a suggestion...that you may have already tried?! My DS same as yours, Gifted classes as a young child. Always had to be pushed by me :( He can get 100's on everything when he works, but just doesn't always do it. I too helped him study for 8th and 9th grade exams, cause if I didn't he wouldn't have done it himself. This year I realized that he would never do it on his own if I didn't let him CRASH. I didn't want him to crash his junior or senior yr, so 1st semester this year, I told him...this is your life, this is your future your gonna ruin, I am done! Well, His grades did crash :( DH and I looked at him when the report card came in and just calmly told him, how sad we were that he wouldn't work to his potential and that we were terribly dissapointed. Well, this semester, although his grades are still not where we would like them to be, he worked harder, on his own, no more screaming about grades at this house :) We hope that DS does live up to his potential, but if we kept working for him....pushing him, he would never find his own motivation :( These are just my thoughts, and I know, it is sooooo hard to let go of the reigns when their future is at stake.
I'm still amazed at your ds's school's reaction to mono and think it's awful. Or maybe my dd's school babied her through hers? I guess in the "real world" if you had mono for 6 mths you would really have to suffer through, but geez, I saw how it affected my dd and she ended up missing 4-5 full weeks of school because of it. (She loves school - well the socialization part and can't stand being isolated, so I KNOW she didn't feel well).
Good to know about the therapy. Mine's g/t too, but sure hasn't shown it this year; did til now, other than had some testing issues before, but they just weren't worth 65-85% of the grade like they are in HS. Right now, morale is shot. Sigh.
Yup; they didn't even ask for anything in writing, so there's nothing about the mono on file. I'd say that as of the last couple of weeks, energy is starting to come back (since late October). Sigh.

Ours has been a frustrating and ugly 10'th grade.
