OT- the drought in the US & US economy

Thought I would send a "we are thinking of you" for all you in the US.
I have relatives seriously impacted by the drought in the US South. They have told me that their State has only three months of water left. I can not help to think that I wish we could share some of all the water we have here. It's yet another wet day here.
Plus, the Canadian dollar is now worth more than the US dollar; it is the highest it has ever been. Our dollar was artifically devalued for years but this is crasy. The US dollar keeps going down which translates to the CDN dollar going up against your dollar. I hope your dollar's fall stops soon. Not good;signals a recession in the US is on the horizon.

I think you're right about a recession. The subprime lending mess keeps getting bigger and bigger, and now they're saying that besides defaulting on mortgage loans, the numbers of those defaulting on credit card payments are going to explode. But the CEOs at the banks and mortgage companies who extended credit, often without full disclosure, keep on collecting their big salaries, bonuses and severance packages. The greed in our capitalistic society is sickening. I'm not saying we need socialism, but a happy medium would be nice.
And the drought? For how long have environmentalists world-wide been warning of the consequences of global warming? We in the U.S. refuse to remove our blinders, it seems. That's the only good thing, for us, about the fall in the U.S. dollar. It will teach us that we are not the almighty, know-it-all, can-do-no-wrong nation so many of us think we are.
Thanks for reminding us that it's an election day here!

I read an article in Newsweek or Time(Drs office)that talked about how we in the US don't question our status but how the stats simply dont back it up anymore. The only one that stuck in my mind was that of the 10 richest people in the world, only 2 live in the US!!
That blew my mind-I think of the Bill Gates, Oprah Winfreys-not to mention all the CEOs you speak of and we arent cutting it?
I agree totally with "almighty, know-it-all, can-do-no-wrong nation so many of us think we are."
We went to Toyota and Nissan in '05; it was very hard for DH and he would buy American made again; I doubt I will. We had several GM lemons in a row. But if GM would say "we have some serious issues and are going to look to Toyota and learn from them" I would gladly give GM another go.
Like THAT is gonna happen...
We need to lose the arrogance and learn where we can-starting with health care!!!!
These are all great topics and if you would like to talk more in depth about them head to the Moms & Politics board
Love the diplomacy there!
We were a tad off topic, weren't we? Can you tell DH and I had opposing viewpoints on the car hunting this past weekend?
