Sue, mom to Leah and Seth
My DD will be 16 in 2 weeks and she is the same way. No matter how much I go out of my way for her, it's never enough and she is otherwise a very nice, sensitive kid. It seems like even when I bend over backwards to give her what she wants, she always ends up with an "attitude" because I didn't do more. Just last night, I took her and a friend to the mall. This is my least favorite place to go, and especially after a long day. But I went, because it was for something they needed for spirit week at their high school. (Never mind that they were off all day Tuesday for election day, but somehow the other girl couldn't find a spare moment then!) So after I paced around the mall with them for an hour and a half...not complaining!....we were finally ready to go home when she got all ticked off at me for not buying her a snack on the way out. (Actually, I had agreed, but the thing she wanted wasn't available. So I suggested we just go straight home.) I should mention here that I give her a pretty generous allowance every week for just such occasions, but she burns through that money like it's on fire, so she is always begging me for more.
I don't know what to suggest other than just pointing it out to them when they are being rude or ungrateful. I should have said it right then and there, but instead I held it in and ended up blowing up at her over something small later in the evening...when she was watching "Gossip Girl" and was too engrossed to answer me when I asked her a question! :-\
I have an 18 yo DD who is in her first year of college.
