I think we need to accept that some will be slower to fly from the nest, some will fly erratically, and some will need to be forcibly THROWN into flight-LOL
My youngest has an ADD diagnosis and I recall reading something in the physicians office saying that kids with ADD need a prolonged adolescence. He is only 16 but I anticipate this for a lot of reasons(nasty LDs to boot)
My oldest had some difficulties and I did eventually 'help' him from the nest with deadlines but, honestly, you arent there yet IMO. Your DS is going to school. The job things isnt too good and I said DS had to file 2 applications a day-he started online like Best Buy who I believe requires age 21? But eventually those run out and he did stores. I kept him informed when I saw an ad, made sure he had all his references written on an index card, etc.
I think it takes a short term goal like that-2 applications a day
My oldest is now 22, lives on his own and is self supporting except for college expenses we pay when he decided he did indeed want to return. He is at junior standing now-school is PT and work is FT. This works for him. I think they need to see concrete rewards and money is more rewarding that a piece of paper in 4 years for ADD types.
So yes, there is hope but you will likely need to give up the 4 yrs of FT college and degree dream
And, seriously, I dont feel DS1 has lost ground. He has made a good impression where he works, has excellent experience behind him-the joke at work is whether he will get his bachelors or manager position first.
Which doesnt mean I didnt shed a lot of tears giving up that dream-of course, it was MY dream-LOL
dear windrush,
that really was sound advice. Not having a child with add but working with them they do need on such occasions to have a prolonged adolescence. just think FT college students on a regular basis become
I don't really have any experience w/ a child w/ ADD, but maybe it's too much for him to be in school full time and start a new job also.
I agree with the others about college...is this something *he* wants to do?
