Mitzi is soooooo right. My kids would say that I'm not a cool mom, but their friends like me and think I'm pretty cool. That is the big secret, a cool mom is anyone elses mom.

Here's a little story. One day I was at my friends house, my son and hers are best friends. She also has a dd that is friends with mine and another younger dd who is my sweetie. Somehow we got on the subject of age and the younger dd says something about me being younger than her mom. I laughed, because Lisa is always teasing me because I am older than she is. We got into that their dad and my dh are also younger than me. Her dd says, in the way that young ones do, well she looks younger than you do mom and her son pipes in with "That's because she has that cool hair thing goin' on and Mom's is just flat"

Sometimes the *other* mom is the cool mom, but that's generally when the kid is trying to weasel something out of you..most kids would never trade places.

IMO, a cool mom is one who does her job well while still maintaining an open line of communication with the kids. A cool mom welcomes the kids' friends into her home and treats them as family...meaning they feel comfortable with you, there's plenty of food, they don't feel the need to whisper or close themselves off. A cool mom will tell the kids when they are doing something silly, mean or inappropriate and why that is...because, the easiest way to keep any eye on the going's on is to have them all at your home as much as possible.

A cool mom demands a certain level of respect and order but still has a sense of humor, doesn't nag, doesn't make mountains out of molehills,

Interestingly I am considered a "cool mom" among my dd's and son's friends.
