Depression is one of the top three reasons students visit the counseling center, said Paul Morones, associate director of the counseling center.
Depression is not uncommon for college students because most people experience high stress levels in their 20s, Thomas said. This is the time people first confront financial insecurity, feelings of isolation from moving out and the termination of long-term relationships. And schoolwork can make things worse.
Students are on a sort of treadmill with the intense schoolwork, which has to be completed in a short time, Thomas said. It leaves little time for rejuvenation, especially if there are other intense things happening in their lives.
Continuous strain can wear down a student's psyche, sending him or her on a downward spiral of fatigue, sadness, loss or gain of appetite, insomnia, lethargy and feelings of worthlessness, which are all symptoms associated with depression, Morones said.
