I was FURIOUS!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure I have ever been so mad at my 13 yo. Last week we ordered a really nice loft bed for the 10 & 8 yo girls (they share a room). It was delivered and set up yesterday. As soon as the delivery men left they were told that no one was to EVER jump from the top bunk to the lower full size bed underneath. After we told them all to go up to bed last night we heard this horrible crashing sound. I said "what was that" DH said "sounded like a board breaking". We ran upstairs to find that $900 and only 8 hours later we had a broken bed!!!!! The 13 yo had jumped from the top to the bottom and broke the wooden side rail completely in half!!!!!!! I was so mad I felt nauseous.

A few years ago, we bought both girls identical new beds.

OMG if I were you I'd seriously cut back on priveleges and allowances for the 13 year old until the $900 is made up.

OH WOW....I can understand your fury.....BBBUUUUTTTTT...I'll play devil's advocate for a sec.......how tempting that platform bed would be for a young teen....................and the warning given was BEGGING to be broken...you know NOTHING would EVER go wrong......NOBODY would EVER know...................

When I am most furious at my boys, I try so very hard to remember what I was thinking and doing at their age.

All 3 of them were grounded and we told the 13 yo she had to pay to fix the new bed. She had been saving for a new ipod and already had $180 saved up. You can imagine her face when we told her she had to pay for the damages.

I called Rooms To Go today and asked how to go about getting a replacement side rail for the lower bed. She chuckled and said you just got it yesterday, what happened? She laughed and said no problem. They are bringing us a new side rail at no charge!! I was shocked at that. I was expecting to pay for a new rail(rather have my DD pay for the new rail).

Are you going to let her off the hook? I think it is sheer luck that they aren't charging you for the side rail, and I'd probably still require some restitution from my teen. Maybe even some extra chores to make up for your wasted time in making the calls and replacing the rails?

I agree that it's luck about the free replacement. I have wondered if I had gotten another rep on the phone would the outcome have been the same? From what the RTG rep said the delivery men will change out the rail. DD has had everything taken away, cell & house phone, computer, friends, and anything else she enjoys. I will make DD dip into her ipod fund to pay to tip the delivery men for their time and efforts.

I'd be careful on severity and length of punishment. Surely your DD knows this was a dumb, impulsive thing to do, and probably feels awful. A short restriction (the weekend at most) and some money from her fund seem to fit the "crime". Over punishing just makes things worse, destroys communication, and totally takes away incentive to be "good". Once everything is "lost", and there's nothing left to lose anymore....seems like a set-up.

She is only grounded for 3 days as well as her sisters. I do believe they have learned their lesson, as all of them were very upset over the incident. The 13 yo did apologize to her sister for breaking her new bed. I am much calmer now, and was able to talk to them about it yesterday afternoon. I know she did not mean to break anything. But, when I saw the bed all I could see at that time was $900 down the drain in 8 hours. I am happy it was the bed that was broken and not one of the girls. DD13 is notorious for having nasty accidents that require bones being set, stitches, or oral surgery to put teeth back in.

I totally agree with you...said way better than I could ever have.

lgdavis....how lucky for you that Rooms 2 Go was cooperative. I'd daresay that broken rail is probably pretty common. I think having her thank the delivery men and tip them is an awesome idea.

When we had DS's bunk beds delivered...this was quite a few years ago...it took 2 men about an hour and a half to do the assembly job. DS's room has it's own entrance right off the drive, so that part of it was easy. But DS decided to play the fool...he was outside and kept making silly noises and stuff by the door as they worked and even went as far as to toss a few pebbles into his room...like they would be startled or something, I don't know. They pretty much ignored his antics, but I also made him go and shake their hands and tip them when they were done. Just so he had to face them after acting silly. Kids. They are so lucky we love them.
