DD16's dinner party

On Sunday night, my DD hosted a dinner party for 4 friends (well, actually five were invited but one didn't show up, and said it was because she got in a fight with her parents, but didn't bother to call or text or im to say she couldn't come).

Anyway, Leah put a lot of thought into what the course of the dinner would be, laid out a beautiful table, had "favors" for each guest.....a ton of work! Although she's a great baker, she isn't really a "cook", so this was a big undertaking!

DH, DS, and I were *not* invited LOL. We went out to dinner and then came home later. Luckily there were leftovers, so we still got the benefit of the cooking!

Wow, Sue, that's very ambitious! Good for her! My DD can barely boil water. My 13 y.o. DS is the cook in the family (aside from me). He loves to eat, so that has been his motivation to learn his way around the kitchen.

Leftovers! Lucky....

My DD would have wanted me to be the waiter that rushes in when the little bell is rung.... :-)

What was on the menu??

Good for her for having the courage to host the dinner!

I remember my sr. year in HS, another couple and I were at my bf's home and we were going to cook dinner. We were making rice and figured we needed a cup per person, so we measured four cups of UNCOOKED rice. I can't remember what the main course was, but I know we had way too much rice. Neither of us girls was a cook--it was pretty funny.

I think that is so cool that she did that.

Sounds wonderful Sue. Do tell what did she serve? I'm glad it went well. I try to encourage Kelsie to do things like that but she thinks everything would have to be very fancy. I tell her that even something basic is okay, that friends would love to have her cook for them and that I would help her anyway.

Did she come up with the idea, menu etc. all on her own or did she need a little bit of help from Mom?

Here is my horror story. Dave and I were going together and he invited his bff over. They have been friends since they met in Jr. HS so since they were about 13 yo. I had heard so much about her that I wanted to make a good inpression, so I made a roasted chicken which was awful, it was not cooked enough and was a bit bloody when we cut near the joint of the leg, and I just heated up some soup from a can, Campbell's Cream of Broccoli and it tasted like the can. It was all so embarassing and I wasn't a teen, I was in my later 20's.

My DD started out slowly, a year or so ago, with just that - boiling water. I'd call her on my way home from work and say "could you start the pasta for dinner?" LOL Food Network has turned her on to cooking recently - you can't watch Tyler Florence and not want to cook what he's cooking!

I wasn't the waitress - that would have been the glamorous job - I was the sous chef (chopping onions and zucchini) and the busboy (bus-mom?) - I got to help with the cleanup!

She made potato pancakes with smoked salmon and sour cream for appetizer, ratatouille and chicken parm for dinner, and poached pears with rum raisins and marscapone cheese for dessert.

I hate that her friend ditched them - but this has been a girl who has not been a very reliable friend, so no one was surprised. Leah and I had an interesting talk about friends who might not always be "good" by parents' standards but who are loyal and good friends, and other friends (like this one) who parents like, but who is not a loyal friend.

She did come up with most of the menu on her own - but of course I helped! I love to cook, so I helped out in the prep, too. Tell Kelsie it doesn't have to be fancy - and Leah picked a few things that could be made ahead of time, so it wasn't rushed. Leah's dessert - poached pears - involved melting butter and brown sugar, basting pears cut in half, and then putting them in the oven for 20 minutes - topped with rum raisins mixed with marscapone cheese. It was very easy/simple, but had an amazing taste and looked very fancy!

It's funny, she's been wanting to do this for a while - and was never really nervous about it! She said "my friends like any kind of food, they'll eat anything" LOL
