Temple Youth Group

DD16 is the President of our Temple's Youth group and she's been working so hard to try and increase membership and participation. Today they scheduled a 'baking marathon' (she volunteered our apartment) so they can have a bake sale tomorrow during Religious School. She was so psyched for this (you all know that baking is one of her passions!). Lots of planning, emails, facebook, etc.....and only one kid showed up, and he's in 8th grade (technically not a Youth Group member yet, he's the liaison to the younger kids). So it's Leah, their advisor, and Darren. They're busy baking, but DD is so disappointed that none of her friends came to help out.

She just came into where I am and said I would be so done with this youth group if it didn't count as an extra curricular for college applications. I hate that she's so discouraged and that she feels obligated to do something just because it might help her in college apps.

Sue, mom to Leah and Seth

She must be disappointed, but she could turn this negative experience into something positive. If she works hard to motivate the other kids in the group for the next event, she can write a college essay about how she turned the group around. I'd never suggest anything like that to my shy ds, but your dd is one who could pull it off, I bet!

Sorry to hear your DD was disappointed...sounds like fun. I wonder what the secret for success is for

Sue, I hope Leah can hold her head high, smile and tell everyone what a wonderful time they had even thought there were only the 3 of them. Maybe that will make the kids that didn't turn up feel that they did miss something fun and worthwhile.

Give my hugs to Leah!
