A mouse in the house

Yikes - we have a mouse in our apartment. He/she hangs out somewhere in the walls of our kitchen and comes out at night to see what crackers or bread or cereal we might have left on the counter. We've moved all the stuff to an upper, closed cabinet, but I still come out in the morning to find evidence that he/she has been walking on my counters (EW!). I've set a trap twice - once with cheese, once with peanut butter and crackers - but no luck. DH says he's never been successful in trapping a mouse - are they too smart for that? DD says "WHY haven't you done something about this mouse situation?!" I'm a softie and I hate killing something, but the mouse is getting braver - coming out when we're here and awake - and DD is getting scareder - won't go into any room unless multiple lights are on.

Any ideas? Has anyone successfully getting rid of a mouse? We're moving in a month, we hope, so maybe I should let the next tenant worry about it?

OK - I should have specified a solution that doesn't involve bringing another animal into the house! LOL We have one hamster, and that seems to be enough pets for us!

Well, I have 4 cats and I still spot a mouse now and then. And they are brazen little creatures. I live in the country...we get field mice, and they are cute, so it makes it all that much harder to do them harm. I have a trick that has worked (for me) on several occasions. When

I grew up in an old neighbourhood in an old Victorian home and we had mice alright.

Oh yea....we had one or two field mice for a couple of years, followed by some with babies when we were in MI, living next to a huge open field that belonged to the church next door. Fortunately, they stayed in our basement, mostly in the storage area. DH and DS managed to catch a few, then I went out and bought the metal box trap that worked great with PB as bait. It's a live trap, but I just let them die, then threw them in the trash. I have no sympathy for nonendangered species that invade human territory.

If you find any holes where they might be entering, try plugging them with steel wool laced with cayenne pepper.

So far no mice here in VA, thank God!

If anyone ever has a problem with chipmunks, I have experience with those critters, too.
