She didn't answer 4 or 5 questions? Depending on the mark value of those questions, it is very possible for her to get a 53. (By the way, here a 53 is a pass.)

Open book tests are might to test the student's understanding of the material. They are not usually just a case of finding the answers in their notes or book. We call that type of questions here "application questions".

So, if she just memorized the facts and didn't understand the material, it is very possible.

There were 50 questions, so I gather 2 pts a question....

A lot would depend upon how many questions were on the test as well as what the value was of each of the questions she missed.

It's all relative because above 50 is a pass here doesn't mean it does not require effort. Our 50 is your 70 or 1 of your marks is worth 5/7ths in our marking scheme.

We mark harder and from what I have gather, our kids take more concentrated courses. We also
have fewer tests, no class participation marks and no most courses do not give marks for assignments. Kids do get marks for lab reports which are marked very tough.

The kids also write final exams that are worth at least 30% and sometimes more of their final mark. They also tend to have mid terms as well. Here, class averages in the 70s are considered good and typically.

Were the questions multiple choices? Those are very easy to trick kids with. If the questions were not multiple choice but word answers. Perhaps she got only partial marks. The teacher wanted her to elaborate.

Go see the teacher and ask to see the test. Ask her to go over it with you and your DD.

Was it multiple choice where she had to fill in a grid that is machine scored? If so, maybe she just made an error filling out the answer sheet that resulted in MANY errors. It's good you're contacting the teacher...she/he may also have made a mistake in recording your DD's score.
