Wow- what a scary week! That would make me feel weird about the school, too.

AS someone who just stopped working for a school system wow! There was a company to help with supervision? Is there camera's in the school! Is the report of the knife real? I am just asking because once things happen all kind of rumors spread out of control! I feel so sorry for you! What a scary thing, school's are suppose to provide a safe and conducive environment

That is really freaky. School violence nowadays is increasing. The school system should be fixed!!! There should be CCTV in every corner of the school. It's better for us parents to monitor our kids when they are out of the house, we don't know what might happen. Airlink mobile offers unlimited calling plan called Powerlink for as low as $24for a week. It really helps me a lot to connect with my dd from time to time and know where she is. Well, i know there are times that she'll lie to me but at least I am confident that she is safe and she'll call whatever happens. You should get one for your kids too.

Schools are just a reflection of the world and community around them.

The drunken woman, a man+kids sounds pretty strange. What was their motivation?

The supervisory person being investigated for assault we hear about now and then, in any school system.

The knife in a locker--good thing it was in the locker and not on anybody. Mabye some kid who normally carries one forgot to disarm. Maybe he feels unsafe en route to school; maybe he's a victim of bullying. Then again, maybe he intended to use it on a classmate.

Our acceptance of violence in the media makes all these things more common than they were 20 years ago, imo. The inet has made porn so easily accessible, and that probably contributes to increasing numbers of sexual assault. When parents don't monitor the behavior of their kids, and when the school does not make an effort to curb bullying things can easily get more dangerous. It is scary and there are no easy solutions. I think the greater the sense of community we can develop within our schools, the more safe we'll feel. That means making everyone feel important, and not shunning them--sometimes our administrators or staff are guilty of that, and that sets the tone in the school.

Pretty scary things happen in many schools, even the expensive private ones. Our school has had many scary events, from elementary school on up. I live in a rural area, but the district itself is big and there are over 1500 kids in the jr. sr. hi alone. Since 9/11 and Columbine,

Good post..parental involvement and awareness is a great deterrant...(sp.?)

I went to high school in the mid-70's...a very big school district, but suburban. The school was not racially mixed, only a handful of what were then *minorities*...and mostly they were popular kids, there were not many racial issues among students, altho same could not be said for the parents. There were fights, but the gangs hadn't yet arrived. There were many teen pregnancies. Most just *left* school, no reason given, and some stuck it out...oftentimes those pregnancies involved kids you would not have expected it from. Lots of kids smoked in the bathrooms, some kids brought drugs and alcohol and weapons to school. Seems like most times, no one said anything. Some things never change tho. When a student died, everyone was sick over it, whether you knew them or not. There were student protests and walk-outs. The drinking age was still 18, so 16 and 17 year olds were pulling it off, they knew which bars looked the other way. I remember going and seeing girls I knew, sitting at the bar and drinking and smoking like they were so sophisticated. I only went a handful of times, had a beer in the corner and was always scared to death. Never had a fake ID.

And most importantly, my parents never.had.a.clue. They lived in their own middle-class world and chose to be blind to everything regarding us kids. Just sayin'...

What is powerlink? Is it a moblie phone? I have a story about one of those!

Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.
