Are the canned, fat-free refried beans permissible in Phase 1? Many thanks in advance!

I know that refried beans are not allowed at all but I'm not sure about the fat free kind so I'm anxious to see the answer if anyone knows.

I believe refried beans are made with pinto beans which are off limits in phase 1, but okay on phase 2. (I know, I love them too! lol) That is unless they changed it recently. I havent seen the newest list

They are for Phase 2, because they are mashed-up pinto beans.

Well, that's too bad-- I love them! I'm thinking though that I may try to make my own, but with black beans. It seems like you could put canned black beans in the Cuisinart with some seasonings and they'd turn out kind of refried-ish. Thanks for the help!

Fat Free refried black beans are fine for phase one. Most health food places have them, always check labels before buying!

(Trader Joes has black beans w/ jalepenos) so good!

Some major grocery chains also carry refried black beans (fat free). Love'em. I actually prefer them to the regular ones. I second the Trader Joe's note. If you're lucky enough to have a Trader Joe's (my favorite) or a Wild Oats, take advantage for things like the refried black beans. They also tend to carry lots of whole wheat pasta and great low sugar whole wheat blueberry muffins (they look scary but are great).

For those who haven't been, TJ's is much cheaper than my regular grocery store for many items including frozen fruit and veggies.

Actually they are not ok on P1, they are pinto beans and that is one of the only beans that are not allowed on P1.
