I'm new....and not losing!?

Hi, I'm Nancy....just joined today. I'm 49, married with two teens. I would like to lose 10 pounds. Since I'm 5' 1" and started this diet at 120, I felt like 10 lbs. was enough. I'm on Day 10 of Phase I at the moment. A couple of thoughts about this whole diet thing. I've never been on a diet before....never needed to be. But now I'm nearing menopause, and my body is holding on for dear life to fat! Yuck! I recently bought a new scale and it has a body fat index monitor. I was shocked to see my body fat at 31%!! That means I'm a short, relatively thin FAT person. Weird combination I know. Anyway, I bought the book, read it and it made sense to me. Plus I know enough about nutrition to know that basically the SBD is a diet that changes how you think about food, and in the long term helps you to eat more healthfully. I've been SO disciplined which in itself is amazing because I do love my bread, pasta, etc. I cheated in that I have weighed myself. Turns out it is a good thing, otherwise I would not have noticed my 3 pound weight loss last week. Now I'm back up to 118 or 119. I'm disappointed to say the least. I've eaten what I'm supposed to, exercised some (this is somewhat hit or miss with me...mostly hit though), and I really haven't seen big changes either in the scale, or in the way my clothes fit, etc. I can say that I notice the fact that there is no longer a lot of bloating in my stomach....my system feels emptier than it used to when I'd eat a lot of bread. Any suggestions?? I'm not going to give up, but I sure would like to think that I would lose something in the first phase!!

SBD is a great way to help you "clean" out your diet if you've never really watched what you ate before.

Just a side note though - to lower body fat%, the BEST way to do it is with strength training 3 times a week if you don't already exercise.

Be patient with yourself. Some people who dont have much weight to lose will lose it slower than those who have more to lose. Slower is better as you will be more successful in keeping it off. Ionly lost 5lbs in two weeks on phase one(i have 40lbs to lose), so you are doing great! I felt less bloated and slightly slimmer in the tummy area before the scale showed any difference. I believe a persons body goes through a "detox period" which is a good thing because i myself was "addicted to" my breads, pastas and sweets. I can definetly tell the difference. Keep going and you will see results!! Good luck and welcome!

Thanks for your feedback! I guess I do need to be patient. My hubby says give it a month....not just the initial two week phase. Also, I DO need to get moving with my weight training. I was doing great last winter/spring and then fell off the wagon so to speak. At my age, I need strength training, even if I didn't want to lose a pound.

Hi Nancy,

I am 36 and a thin fat person too!!!!

I am 5'4" and weigh 111 but still have a belly and "jiggy stuff" on my hips and thighs. My legs and upper body are strong though. STRANGE!!!!

I started at 120 as well and I did take off 5 pounds in two weeks and then another 5 in the next two weeks. Stay with it and you will see results. I have been "cheating" for the past few weeks and have not lost ... I am at a very "Liberal Phase 3" right now. I need to buckle down and find a happy medium between P1 and P2 and really stick to it for a while... I keep saying I will, and if only I would!!!!

Nacy I had the same problem. I lost 2.5 lbs during Phase 1. Then I lost another 1.5, but I just gained it back this week. It is a crazy diet. I think your body is just to lose and gain in odd ways. Plus, you don't have much to lose, so it'll take longer. I'm sure you've heard that before. I've been doing this diet since Jan. 6th. I only have 10-20 lbs to lose. I'm trying to get back to my prebaby weight.
