In Phase 1, Dr. Agatston recommends the following beans: black, butter, chickpeas, green, Italian, kidney, lentils, lima, pigeon, soy, split peas, and wax.

In Phase 2, you can reintroduce navy beans, pinto beans, and black-eyed peas, all of which have a higher glycemic index.

So does anyone know a bean that I can use to make ham and bean soup? I am only on day 2 of phase one and I made some soupe with navy beans today. Oops. I don't know much about beans. What can I substitute that tastes like navy beans but I can have in phase one?

Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing. I made some turkey ham & bean soup last week that was so yummy. I looked forward to having it in P1. I asked on the southbeachdiet.com website and two replies said they were allowed. I looked in archive and it said they weren't. So I'm unsure. I went to the store tonight to see if I could find a bean that looked similar. But I think basically any white beans are marked off the list. But if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

They don't taste quite the same as the navy beans, but I use lentils. The flavor is wonderful! I had never had lentils before starting SB, so I was very unsure about trying them now... I love them!

Don't worry about using the navy beans this time. This WOE takes a little bit of time to figure out.

Thanks for your post! How do you cook the lentils? I usually just use a crock pot for the navy beans. I'd love to have your recipe! :)

I just put the lentils in with whatever I start with in the morning.

Ham Lentil soup

smoked ham - as lean as possible, and trim off any visible fat - any type of lean meat, with a dash of liquid smoke would be suitable

1 package lentils - 16 ounce

3-4 stalks celery cut into chunks - more if you want

1 turnip cut in 1" chunks

Pepper

1-2 dried bay leaves

Put ham, lentils, celery, turnip & bay leaves in crockpot. Fill crockpot with water (I have a 4.5 quart crock). Cook on low 4-8 hours. Just before serving, add pepper to taste. Ham tends to be a bit salty, so only add more salt if you really need it.
