starting over and new job

I tried South Beach a couple of weeks ago and I messed it up. I admit that I came from Atkin's and expected quicker weight loss (unrealistic expectations). I will say that I have made some modifications to the diet, such as I still use butter IN MODERATION. I'm sorry, but scrambled eggs in olive oil just doesn't taste the same, and I really don't believe in using "fake" stuff like SmartBalance. Whenever there is a fake product out there made to mimic something else, it just seems like they would have to add all sorts of chemicals and crap to get it to work. I'd rather just put a little bit of the real stuff in my body. And I don't like low-fat cheese either, but again, I don't really eat a whole ton of it and I do try to get mozzarella and stuff that is naturally lower fat. I do have a question though....sometimes in the morning I don't feel like cooking. Typically my breakfast is the mini-quiches (I freeze them) or scrambled eggs and a ham slice with V-8 or tomato juice. But I get sick of eggs every day. So I started eating cottage cheese. Only problem is I can't stand the taste of cottage cheese by itself. Is it ok to add some blueberries and raspberries to it? I know that no fruit is allowed, but I think berries are lower in sugar than some veggies even. There is maybe 1/4 cup or less of berries in there. Also, I just started a new job on Friday. I found out that there are NO refrigerators in the entire building for people to put their lunches (2500 people or so work in this building....you'd think they'd put in a fridge). What are some options I can take for lunch? I have an insulated bag and some of those ice-packs to keep them cold, but it never seems to be as cold as it should be. Any tips on packing my lunch so it will stay cold, and what to pack? There are a lot of places to get a SouthBeach friendly salad or even soup (black bean), but who can afford to go out every day? I hope I didn't ramble too much. Thanks!

Angela

height 5'8"

current weight 182.5

goal weight 164 (I read somewhere that you should make small goals for yourself and a healthy goal for weight loss is 10% of your current weight. So that is how I figured out my goal weight. Once I reach that goal, I will probably shoot for another 10% (of 164). I think this was an excellent tip though instead of saying my goal is 145 or 150, 164 seems a lot more attainable.).

Hi Angela~

I am right there with you on the egg topic...I have been told to try I can't believe its not butter spray, olive oil or smart balance, etc. I just cannot take the taste that it adds to the eggs. So, I started using just a smidge of butter in the pan-but, I switched to I can't believe its not butter...not the spray though. Its either that or I don't eat the eggs...and then what?! Failure I am sure! LOL

They make those dinky coolers (size that holds a six pack)that you could take to work. I did that before.

I wish you the best of luck. Like you - I would love the speed of atkins but, this is the healthier choice!

Hi Angela! Welcome back to SBD! It sounds like you are having a hard time figuring out the plan, so I thought I would try to answer some of your questions.

First, have you read the book? If not, see if you can. The underlying concepts of the diet will be much more clear. Second, here is a link to the food list for phase 1:

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-fbsouthbeach&msg=4809.1

DH is on SBD too, and I pack his lunch everyday and I use ice-paks to keep it cold. His favorite lunch is chicken salad made with canned white meat chicken (found near the tuna in the store), with all kinds of chopped veggies, (celery, green onion, red pepper, cucumber), garbanzo, white or black beans, olives, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. I put it in tupperware, with the ice pack on top. On top of the ice pack, I put his snacks - cheese stick, turkey rollups, mozzarella and roasted peppers, etc... He says everything stays cold until he is ready to eat it.

I know I haven't answered all of your questions. Please read the book, and spend some time looking around at Phase 1 advice here on the board. Once you make a commitment to this WOE, restart Phase 1. If you follow the foods to enjoy list, it will be tough for a few days, while you de-tox from sugars. But you WILL see results in that short period of time, and that will motivate you to continue to Phase 2 - then you can start to add back some other foods (like the berries).

Good luck, and let us know how you are doing!
