Pure vanilla vs. vanilla extract

I don't have vanilla extract, and have been using pure vanilla in my ricotta dessert. Is that ok? I have no idea what the difference is! We have a huge bottle of pure vanilla that rec'd from friends in Puerto Rico, so that's all I ever use!

TIA

Maggie is right, you are using the really good stuff. My parents are in Mexico right now, so I asked them to buy me a bottle there. It is much cheaper there, and you can buy it in big bottles.

If you go to the supermarket, you will see vanilla extract (which is what you have), sometimes called "pure" vanilla extract, and imitation vanilla extract. I've never tried the imitation stuff, and I don't know what else it has in it. I always buy the regular stuff. I can't wait to get my big bottle of good stuff :) I love ricotta cremes! I've gone through two and a half "big" bottles (meaning the bigger one at the supermarket, not the huge one you can get in Mexico or Puerto Rico or wherever) since I started SBD at the end of October!
