Confusion on what to look for on labels
| Mon, 03-22-2004 - 1:16pm |
I've read the SBD book...but I guess I'm very confused here as far as what to look for on food labeling. For instance, the no sugar added fudgsicles. What makes them ok? Are these ok?:

Also, still confused about cheese! Does the pkg have to say reduced fat? If so, where do I get any variety? All I see is cheddar!
Thanks ladies!
Kara

Hi Kara, reposting this here for you!

Hi Kara, this appears to be some kind of ice cream bar.
Here are some low-fat cheese brands that I have found:
Swiss Knight low-fat wedges
Aloutte low-fat herb and garlic spread
Cabot (of Vermont) low-fat cheeses
Matire d' brand low-fat cheeses
Alpine Lace reduced fat cheeses - these sometimes come pre-packaged as well as at the deli counter
Hope this helps!!
Karen
As for shredded cheeses Sargento makes many different varieties: mozz, mexican, cheddar, parm and so on!
Thanks for the info on the labels, but I to am confused, and your info didn't seem to help me.
For bread, do we only look at fiber content? Do we look at calories, fat, carbs or sugars at all? The last bread I bought was a dark rye (which is on the list) and it seemed to have fewer carbs and sugars that other breads, but not as much fiber as you mentioned going for.
Salad dressings....only look at the sugar??? My last dressing was a FF Ceaser Vinegrette that had 0 Cal and 0 Fat but maybe 3G of Sugar, now I have some other type of Vinegrette dressing that has Calories and Fat but the recommended <2 Grams of Sugar.....
So my question is, do Calories and Fat grams not work into our equation at all? What about Carbs?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jennifer

Yes, you look at fiber content in bread (not fat or carbs).
Hi Jennifer, I'm glad Cathy answered much for you!
