I just finished reading the South Beach Book and I am all geared up to start Phase One in about a week. But here is my problem:

I am newly married, and my husband is not very supportive of any dieting efforts. I finally conviced him to try the first phase of South Beach, with a promise that if he doesn't like it and doesn't see results, then I will stop bugging him about his growing beer belly. But then I looked through the menu on Phase 1 and I realized that there are a lot of foods that I would happily eat, but he would refuse to try (artichokes, tomato juice, tuna fish.) So I feel like I have two choices: limit my food choices to match my DH's preferences (by the way, I'll have to do almost all the cooking for him, otherwise he'll cheat,) OR do the diet by myself and let him keep all of those tempting/forbidden foods in the house.

Has anybody dealt with a similar problem? This is really my first effort at a structured diet and I really don't want to fail right off the bat.

I am the only one in my household strictly on this WOE, which includes a husband and an 8 year old daughter....

My husband enjoys the dinners I have been making....I've even tried things I've never had before, such as chili and zucchini and summer squash, they are my new favorites. This is a healthy way of eating, much better than our meals before....macaroni and cheese, frozen pizza, pasta......

They will eat these meals with me, but their snacks, they must still have. My husband has an addiction to oreo cookies......I buy them every week.....a bowl of ice cream before bed....country kitchen donuts for breakfast....pop tarts.....YUM!!!! The only thing that really keeps me going, is that I want this WOE to work. I want to loose the weight, and if I eat those goodies, it may start the cravings again, and it'd be back to square one. I've come so far to start cheating. I guess I have will power of steel!

This WOE does work, and it's not easy with the bake sale's at work, food days, dunkin' donuts on a weekly basis all floating around, but for me, it's worth it!!

Two of my favorite meals are:

Chicken parm: chicken breast, emeril's pasta sauce, low fat mozz cheese, bake for about 40 minutes....comes out sooooo tender, add a vegetable and salad, YUM

Fresh salad (grape tomatoes, gr peppers, cucumbers, romaine and red or green leaf lettuce, l/f mozz cheese), I'll pick up one of those rotissarie chicken or turkeys at the local grocery store, remove this skin, and shred the meat on top of the salad, top off with Newman's Olive Oil and Vinegar dressing.....YUM!

Hope this helps, and good luck with starting! The trick is just finding foods your DH will enjoy to start off with, and maybe slowly introduce other foods not usually on your menu. He may be impressed with the results and be ready to try new things too!

Penn Girl,

You will go crazy (I think) cooking two separate meals. My DH is on SBD with me and he doesn't complain at all --we are eating better than ever. I'd suggest you go forward full force and don't make a big deal that what you're preparing is SBD. The only times he might complain would be breakfast and desserts but then maybe this is where you would give in and let him stray. Then you'll see results and he won't and maybe that'll convince him to go on it 100%. I hope that makes sense and I'm not rambling too much!

also, what no one has mentioned yet....is that you can't change your hubster unless HE WANTS TO. He can get combo #1 3 meals a day if he pleases, but you are doing SBD FOR YOU. Yes, it is difficult when there are junk foods all around, but think about how terrible those foods are for you, and maybe he'll come around, maybe he won't...but until then, you have this board for support.

Penn girl, try searching for recipes that you believe he would like.

Not to worry... there are a few things you can do... I'll post an easy to follow meal planning guide... you can cook from that, make 2 veggies (I often do... and cook extras for your omelets in the mornings!); one you BOTH like plus the one YOU like....

I was in a similar boat at first.
