Milk and FF ice cream???
| Mon, 03-29-2004 - 2:13pm |
Ok, I know this is beating a dead horse, but I am looking at the allowed foods list. It says...
DAIRY
Low-fat milk (fat-free and 1%)
Fat-free 1/2 & 1/2 (less than 2 tablespoons)
Soy milk
Yogurt: low-fat or fat-free plain or vanilla light/lite only
AND on the foods to avoid:
DAIRY
Ice cream
Milk, whole
So, is it somehow the ice cream that's a problem, or the sugar and high fat content milk it's made of. Because there are PLENTY of no sugar added/splenda sweetened NO FAT (labeled on the carton as made from fat free milk..which is allowed) ice creams.
What's the difference? Why no ice cream if it's following the no fat milk/no sugar added rule???
Becky

Your question intrigued me to get out some ice cream cartons and take a look. Let's see if we can put this horse out of its misery! Here is what I found:
NSA Fudgesicles contain things that technically are not P1 friendly; maltodextrin which is listed as the second ingredient and modified food starch which is further down the list. The milk used is nonfat milk. They have 19 carbs, 3 sugars but only 45 calories and 0g fat.
Regular chocolate ice cream contains milkfat and nonfat milk, cane sugar syrup, corn syryp, high fructose corn syrup..... This ice cream has 16 carbs AND 16 sugars AND 150 calories. It also has 9g fat (5 sat fat).
Lite ice cream contains milk, skim milk, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, modified cornstarch, sugar, cream..... This ice cream has 19 carbs and 15 sugars, 3.5 g fat (2.5 sat fat) and 120 calories.
Fat-free no sugar added ice cream contains nonfat milk, maltodextrin, whey, ...... This ice cream has 23 carbs, 6 sugars, 0 fat and 100 calories.
My theory: although fudge pops have some non-SBD friendly ingredients, the calorie and sugar counts are very low compared to the regular ice cream. Plus, by comparison, the ingredients are arguably better.
Dr. A had to give us SOMETHING as a treat here to keep us going - the fudge pop choice is the best alternative AND falls within the 75 sweet treat calorie limit.
Karen :)
P.S. Why do I have all this ice cream?? I too, was hopeful early on in this WOE!
Thank you Karen for the research!!!
Ok, then you know what, I am going to EAT my blue bunny fudge bars (maybe not every day. I managed to serve DH a huge bowl of chocolate chip ice cream and not even want my fudge bar last night!) because they are just like your NSA Fudgesicles, and are sweetened with Splenda. The only thing I could find wrong was the maltodextrin listed way down in the ingredients list. (like, #15. Which is probably bad. Too many ingredients. FAR from a "whole food")
Ok, I'll leave it be now. Thanks for finishing off that horse! LOL
