I am needing to lose weight for my upcoming wedding and have heard a lot of good things about south beach. I eat fish but dont eat any chicken or meat, the types of "meat" I eat are soy foods and have little to no carbs but I dont know how strict the carb rule is for phase 1. Is anyone else in the same boat I am in, I remember seeing that tofu is okay to eat, so would other fake meats be okay.

Since meat substitutes are made of vegetarian sources they will be higher in carbs than meat. That's just a given. So what I would do is read the labels and look at the saturated fat content. I'd make sure to use only those items very low in saturated (and total) fats. You should notice that only low fat tofu is allowed. The same would go for any meat substitute.

Don't forget you can eat lots of beans on this diet. And you could have barley too. (I forget if it is a phase 2 food.) Since barley is very low on the glycemic index, you could probably have in phase 1 if you don't have meat.

I also rarely eat meat. When I do it is just a very small amount. I do not feel at all deprived because I am not having meat on this diet. It is NOT a high protein diet. Or at least a person does not have to consume high amounts of protein if they do not choose to.
