Hi,

I am starting tomorrow and although I will tend to use the balsamic vinegar and canola oil a lot for salads, I was wondering if there is one bottle dressing we can use for variety and for ease if going out....are there any?

Thanks!

Hi Becki, yes you can use a variety of salad dressings.

I just got the new SB cookbook, and in it the dr does name a couple of brands of bottled dressing that you can use. He mentions Cardini's original caesar - I only remember this because I used it before I got the book and it's wonderful!! If you're a caesar salad fan, I highly recommend it.

You have already gotten some excellent info here. I found the following from CL-Susan's post the other day:

Member Question: How do we choose salad dressings? Reg., lite, no fat?

Sandy: The very best choices of salad dressings are made from either canola or olive oil. Dressings made from other oils (soybean as an example)

Sandy: are also fine for use. Salad dressings should contain equal to or less than 3 grams of sugar per serving. You will need to check the Nutrition Facts panel to make sure the dressing selected meets this guideline.

Sandy: Some of the lower fat salad dressings do contain less than or equal to 3 grams of sugar. Regular salad dressing can also be used as long as it fits into the sugar recommendation.

Sandy: The problem with some of the fat-free or reduced fat dressings is that the fat is replaced with sugar. Please be careful and always check the sugar content of the dressing selected.

Safe Salad Dressings

(Published 8/12/03) What makes store-bought salad dressings South Beach Diet-friendly? Any commercial dressing with less than 3 grams of sugar per serving is permitted on the South Beach Diet. Newman's Own, which contains 1 gram of sugar per serving, is a good choice. Caesar and blue cheese dressings are fine, too, as long as no more than 3 grams of sugar have been added.

Be careful of low-fat or non-fat dressings. Many times, low-fat products have more sugar added to enhance flavor that was lost as a result of fat reduction. You should also check the label for hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, which are the "bad" trans-fatty acids that have been found to raise cholesterol levels. Dressings with the "good" fats-particularly olive oil-are fine. Vinegar and oil help to slow digestion and eliminate hunger.

Good luck!
