Day Six - going well

How can I hate a diet that lets me eat my favorite greek recipes, omelettes, and fudgecicles?

My mother is French, and my grandfather was an *excellent* cook. I grew up with a passion for food. My only idea of "diet" was to starve myself, and I just couldn't do it. My parents cut back on portions when they want to lose weight, and end up hungry and cranky and putting the weight back on. I even remember a video in health ed when I was in Jr. High, saying "Fats don't make you fat! Too much food makes you fat!" So I've always thought that dieting meant eating barely enough to survive, and I haven't dieted since trying to get into my prom dress 16 years ago.

But this? This is a good thing. I found the supplemental recipe book, which has great recipes marked by phase, and I haven't missed much of anything yet! (Although, I had a SERIOUS craving for sweets yesterday, Day Five.)

Chicken breasts stuffed with spinach and low fat feta cheese. London Broil marinated in capers, garlic, onions and balsamic vinegar. Veggie and cheese omelettes.

My husband was a little concerned about having to eat SBD dinners, but he's on board now! He's eaten like a king all week, and I've tried out new and wonderful recipes that will stick with me even after phase one.

And the jeans that I just put away because they had grown a little too uncomfortable to wear anymore? They fit with room to spare today! They weren't my "skinny jeans" by any stretch of the imagination, but it was my first truimph and it felt good!

I forgot to weigh myself on Day One, so I'm not sure how much I've lost. I have a dr's appt on Monday, which will be Day Eight, and I'm curious to see what the difference is between now and when I saw her a month ago. I'm excited to tell her that I'm finally doing something to lose weight, and I can't wait for her to tell me "good job!"

Day Five was tough - I found myself craving sweets, and then I went scrapbooking where the hostess makes brownies every time. I passed them up, though, and brought my own laughing cow cheese to have with her veggies as my snack while scrapping. It worked for the most part. Tomorrow is my dad's birthday, though, and I'm already thinking that I might cheat and have a small piece of cake. I'm okay with that choice, but we'll see how it goes.

It sounds like you are doing GREAT!!

There is no reason to deprive yourself of sweets!! Sweet treats are allowed on phase 1 - you may have no sugar added fudge bars, popsicles and jello. You can also use sugar free jams, jellies and syrups to flavor things like ricotta cheese and cottage cheese. I really like the ricotta cremes from the original SB book and they were a staple for me in phase 1.

Have you tried the South Beach Peanut Butter Cup? Even your hubby will like this one!

South Beach 'Peanut Butter Cup'
Serves 1

Ingredients:
1 no-sugar-added Fudgesicle
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 tablespoon fat-free frozen whipped topping or whipping cream

Instructions:
Take a no-sugar-added Fudgesicle and scrape it off the stick (microwaving it for about 15 seconds helps). Then add 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and 1 tablespoon of fat-free frozen whipped topping or whipping cream. Mix together and enjoy.

Count the 1 tablespoon of peanut butter as half of your total nuts allowed for the day. (If you use two tablespoons of peanut butter, count that as your total nut allowance for the day.) Count the whipped topping and fudgesicle towards your Sweet Treats for the day.

Well, my dr's appt was cancelled as she was admitted into the hospital last night. I don't know why, and I hope she's okay, but they're not sure she's going to return to her practice (she was leaving in October anyway). So I'm going to have to find a new doctor. I'm bummed about that.

I handled the "birthday cake" issue in a way that I feel good about. We all went out to dinner to celebrate my dad's birthday, and I ordered well (steak, roasted veggies, side salad, hold the potato and no rice thankyouverymuch.) For dessert, my husband was full and didn't want any, which helped. Everyone else ordered a chocolate lava cake each.

I decided ahead of time that if I wanted dessert, I would take one bite and that was it. I wanted to make the decision ahead of time, so it wouldn't be a cave-in in a moment of weakness, and set myself a limit so that I wouldn't go overboard. I had one *tiny* bite of her cake and ice cream, and that was it. I made the decision before getting to the moment, which meant I didn't feel guilty for indulging, and I gave myself a limit so that once I "gave in" I wouldn't just chuck everything and eat a whole dessert by myself, rationalizing it as "I already messed up, might as well enjoy it."

The biggest problem is, I can't tell my family that I'm on SBD. They are SO unsupportive of any sort of dieting, and will either tell me it's just a fad and list the reasons they don't do it themselves, or monitor me in the future and ask me constantly how it's going and judge everything I ever eat. No thank you. I managed to eat well, stick to my plan, and not raise any eyebrows.

I'm actually quite pleased with myself. ;-)

I am DEFINITELY going to try this Peanut Butter Cup recipe! I love love LOVE peanut butter (more than chocolate sometimes), and it sounds yummy!

The only problem is going out to eat, when everyone orders dessert. If I don't want them to know I'm on SBD (see my previous post), then it's a bit strange for me to whip out an "approved" treat when they're all eating something super yummy. But it worked out okay.

Is peanut butter allowed on Phase I? Or do I have to get the sugar-free kind? I might try going to one of those natural foods stores and grind my own with just peanuts - I've always wanted to try that.
