Hello, this is my first day on the SBD. So far, so good. I had way more energy than I normally do in the mornings, which was nice. What else can I drink besides water, a little milk and V8 juice? I mean, I like those, but only those for two weeks straight? Is it ok to drink coke zero?? Also, I was wondering....if I have a snack, and I'm still hungry, can I eat more? It just goes against every weight-loss rule I've ever heard. the whole counting calories and stuff. Is it normal to be hungry the first day or so? I'm not starving. Of course, I could just be bored as well...or craving something and don't realize it. I had more questions than I thought. But, I have a couple more. I have a george foreman grill, it's ok to cook on it, right? I assume it is, but I want to make sure. Also, I'm planning on making catfish tonight for dinner. I was planning on cooking it on the stove, in canola oil, with some lemon juice and herbs sprinkled on it. And scallops on the side, with a salad. I assume this is okay, it does say seafood is ok. But I can't find anything on catfish specifically. I know I have so may questions, and the answers seem they should be obvious, but I really want to make sure I do this right. Thanks so much!!

Hi Jen,

Welcome!

What else can I drink besides water and vegetable juice?

Any diet, decaffeinated, sugar-free sodas and drinks are allowed on all phases. Be sure to check out the sugar-free powdered drink mixes (like Crystal Light) offered in your local grocery, as there’s an increasing variety of flavors like ruby red grapefruit, orange, iced tea, and pink lemonade. In addition, you can enjoy up to two cups of 1 percent or fat-free milk and low-fat, plain soy milk (with 4 grams of fat or less per serving).

You can also drink caffeinated coffee or diet sodas with caffeine added—just try to limit your intake to one to two servings per day. Caffeine stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. When too much insulin is released at once, it can result in cravings. However, one or two cups of coffee or caffeinated soda a day won’t have all that great of an effect on insulin levels—so there's no need to completely deprive yourself!

From the "Daily Dish":

Drinks in Phase 1

Improving your diet isn't only about the foods you eat — it's also about what you drink. During Phase 1 you'll learn to get used to avoiding drinks containing added sugar and other unhealthy fillers.

The following is a list of Phase 1-approved drinks:
Water
One percent low-fat or fat-free milk or buttermilk
Low-fat (4 grams of fat or less) plain soy milk or sucralose-containing soy milk
Coffee and tea (limit caffeine-containing beverages to 1-2 servings per day)
Decaffeinated coffee and tea
Herbal tea without added sugars (Please avoid any teas that promise to help you lose weight or boast any other unrealistic health claim.)
Sugar-free flavored waters, soda, iced teas, powdered drinks, etc.
Club soda or seltzer
Tomato or vegetable juice

You should avoid the following:
Fruit juices
Sodas with added sugar
Whole or 2 percent reduced-fat milk
Alcohol
Flavored waters with added sugar

Thanks so much!that really helped me out a lot.

"Herbal tea without added sugars (Please avoid any teas that promise to help you lose weight or boast any other unrealistic health claim.)"
yeah, I figured that African bushman tea was to good to be true-if it was, we'd be a skinny nation!!

"if I have a snack, and I'm still hungry, can I eat more?
Yes. It's ok to eat more as long as it's from the "phase 1 foods to enjoy list". South Beach isn't about depriving yourself or starving yourself. It's about making the right choices."
Oh, thank god. there are some days I want to eat everything I can, and others where I'll eat a few times a day and be fine. I'm sure everyone can relate! I was on Weight Watchers, and counting everything and trying to stay in points range sucked sometimes. But I guess a "diet" that encourages you to eat dessert and cheese four times a day can hardly be called deprivation. And I never thought ricotta cheese with cocoa powder would taste so good!! I'll go look at that thread you suggested-thanks again!!
