College Student looking to start

Hello everyone! My name is Heather and I am a college student. I am currently looking into starting the South Beach Diet. I bought the book and I know people who have done it and it has worked for them. The problem I'm having about starting the South Beach is the whole money issue. I live in Hawaii and food is already really expensive here much less all the expensive healthy food. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can still do the south beach but not spend a fortune in food. Any ideas or help would be wonderful. Thank you

Hi Heather and welcome!

The South Beach Diet is a wonderful way to start a healthy lifestyle. I'm glad you have the book because it's really important to understand the theory behind the diet.

Here are some tips for college students and for staying on a budget. Take a look and let us know if you have any specific questions.

Welcome!!! Which school are you going to right now? I'm assuming you're on Oahu, right? My husband and I lived there for several years - in Laie, Kailua & Kaneohe. Are you in the dorms or in a regular apartment? If you can get access to any of the bases (like a friend with military ID), try to go shopping at the commissary - you can't beat the prices. If you don't, we found that the only other affordable place to find dairy products was at Wal*Mart (there's one in Mililani and one in Waipahu). Those were the only places we could find milk regularly under $6.99 per gallon. Cheese was also much cheaper at Wal*Mart than anywhere else. Occasionally Star Market & Safeway would have milk on sale for 2 gallons for $7.00. Somewhere else to check for things is Sam's Club if you have a membership. They sale some whole wheat products like ww tortillas. Also, that's where I get Feta cheese and things like that. There's one in Pearl City (heard that one was to be built in Honolulu but it wasn't there when we left). There's also Costco if you prefer them (I do - but we don't have a Costco here, just Sam's). If you don't have the space for things from Sam's you could see if a friend or two would want to go in on the cost of items - especially meats. If you're new to the area and are in the Honolulu area, don't do your food shopping there. Prices are jacked up in Honolulu and Waikiki compared to other parts of the island. Also, Star Market & Safeway have a lot better sale prices than Foodland so try to watch for those sale flyers. :) Btw, go for canned or frozen veggies as much as possible - it's much cheaper and many times more nutritious (because it's canned/frozen the day it's picked).
