vegetable question & feeling too full

Hi,
I've been reading these boards a lot but this is my first post. I've been doing phase 1 for 4 days and I've lost 5 lbs so I'm really motivated. I don't have much weight to lose--maybe 10 lbs more. Basically, I started this because my pants were feeling too tight and I was having trouble controlling my cravings for sugar. I was eating terribly and feeling bad most of the day. The foods I ate consisted mostly of processed flour and sugar.

Anyway, I've never really liked vegetables so it's a struggle for me to eat even the minimum amount. I just ate a big romaine lettuce salad with 3 oz. tuna, a few grape tomatoes and pine nuts with a small amount of olive oil & balsamic vinegar dressing. Now I feel so full that it's uncomfortable. I feel like I'm forcing myself to overeat the vegetables and that can't be good for weight loss.

My question is what happens if you don't get enough vegetables? Are all the vegetables required so that you don't feel hungry throughout the day, and if so, can I cut back on them so I don't feel so stuffed after a meal? Another thing, my protein portions are small but I sort of feel like I'm on the Adkins Diet with all the meat I'm eating--normally I would eat meat only a few times a week and now I'm eating it with every meal. Is increasing my meat intake (even though it is lean) going to have a negative effect on my health?

Thanks!
Scarlett

Hi Scarlett! I'm glad you decided to post!

One of the reasons we eat so many vegetables is to meet daily nutrient requirements. Vegetables are also fiber rich foods that metabolize slowly.

I'm sorry you're not fond of vegetables. We have an extensive list of approved veggies, maybe you can try something new. Or, many here have learned to like vegetables by preparing them differently. We love to roast veggies, they really bring out great flavors in almost all veggies. Another board favorite

Hi Scarlett,

It's nice to meet you.

You don't have to eat any meat on South Beach if you don't feel comfortable eating it.

Thanks for the advice. Usually I can read the other posts to answer my questions, but I have one more I can't find. If I lose all the weight I need to on phase 1 (even if it is just water weight??), should I skip phase 2 and move to phase 3? I feel like I need to stay on phase 1 for one more week to make sure I get rid of my cravings and addiction to sugar, but I don't want to drop below a healthy weight for me. So far, I've lost 6 lbs and I'm starting day 5 on phase 1. I would be happy if I lost 6 more lbs and then just maintain that weight.

Thanks,
Scarlett

Your weight loss will probably begin to slow down in the second week of phase 1.

Well, I spoke too soon. I haven't lost any weight in a couple of days and this morning when I woke up, I was so weak I had to sit down and have some (natural) peanut butter and skim milk before I could do anything. I was very shaky. I'm wondering if I should go on to Phase 2 now or is this normal for the 7th day on phase 1? I'm eating enough and getting my servings of dairy.

Thanks,
Scarlett

Scarlett,

Also, be sure that you're eating 1/2 cup of legumes every day.

I'm still weak and having strong cravings for anything I'm not supposed to have. I'm really having to fight myself from driving to Pizza Hut. I went grocery shopping and bought some Kraft South Beach snack bars just in case I can't handle this anymore. So far, I haven't cheated. When you say legumes, I automatically think "yucky beans" so I'm not sure how to get in 1/2 cup when I can't even choke one down!

I've been very careful (eating at home for the past week) but yesterday I went out to Chili's for lunch and had the "guiltless grill" salmon and two servings of steamed broccoli. It was delicious, but do you think maybe something they used to prepare the food made me like this today? Thanks for your help.

Well, beans are a legume.
