Here's a recent response from the official South Beach Diet nutritionist regarding protein powder:

Protein powders can be used but they do not supply all the nutrients found in whole foods. We would much rather that our members choose whole, real foods rather than protein powders. However, you may use them if you wish. I do have to caution you that heaping on tablespoons of protein powder can lead to weight gain.

The SBD meal plan includes adequate amounts of protein. In healthy individuals adding large amounts of protein to the diet does not provide a benefit. A balanced meal plan based on whole foods is always the best choice.

and this:

Whole food is always the best choice like those named above In general we do not recommend protein shakes on SBD, but if you choose, you can use a shake as a meal replacement starting in Phase 1. We do recommend ones that have a balance of nutrients (protein, fat, and carbohydrate). They should not contain trans fats or high fructose corn syrup. If you do select to use them as a meal replacement, we recommend including a serving of veggies along with it and a lowfat dairy serving.

Hope this helps.
