imitation crabmeat?

Hello there South Beach Dieters. This is my first post. Today is my first day of week two on Phase 1. According to the scale at home I have already lost 4 pounds and my belly looks flatter! YAY!!

I bought the canned crabmeat and it tastes HORRIBLE!! I looked at imitation crabmeat, which I love but, it looked like there were a lot of carbs in that stuff so I didn't get it. I would like to have some with a salad but, can you please tell me if it is allowed in phase one, or any phase for that matter.

Thanks!!

Most canned crab meat is not good because the one's in the aisle with the canned tuna is the dregs of the crabmeat. The imitation crabmeat is indeed loaded with carbs because it is doctored from white fish to make it appear like crabmeat.

See if you can get crabmeat over in the seafood depart. There is a canned crabmeat that I buy for around $8.00 for a 6 oz can. It is also sold in Trader Joe's. Or they may have frozen canned crabmeat which would be good.

how can imitation crabmeat be loaded with carbs if it's made from whitefish, which is a PROTEIN?

It's a lot more than just minced fish. Take a look at the ingredients on the individual packaging. A lot of times they add starches and sugar. Here is just one manufacturer:

I agree with the other poster, look for the cans or the plastic tubs in the seafood department. Try to look for backfin or lump, those are the best.

it is the way they process it. If it was just plain fish it would be 0 carbs (not 12 carbs as it is showing. They add starch sugar, etc. That's why it is not legal for SBD.

Here's how the make it:

Lean meat from fish or land animals is first separated or minced. The meat then may be rinsed numerous times to eliminate undesirable odors. The resulting meat is then beaten and pulverized to form a gelatinous paste. Depending on the desired texture and flavour of the surimi product, the gelatinous paste is mixed with differing proportions of additives such as starch, egg white, salt, vegetable oil, sorbitol, sugar, soy protein, and seasonings. If the surimi is to be packed and frozen, food-grade cryoprotectants also are added while the meat paste is being mixed. Under most circumstances, surimi is immediately processed, formed and cured into surimi products at the time it is produced.

The resulting paste, depending on the type of fish and whether it was rinsed in the production process, is typically tasteless and must be flavored. According to the USDA Food Nutrient Database 16-1, fish surimi contains about 76% water, 15% protein, 6.85% carbohydrate, 0.9% fat, and 0.03% cholesterol.

Here are some old posts about it. Maybe Cathy can double check if it is STILL approved (they can change their minds) But in the past, imitation crab meat was allowed on all phases:

Yeah - but honestly I'd hate the hear the process spelled out for a lot of the food we eat. I mean even the process getting for plain old chicken breasts from the slaughter house to the store is not something I want to think about. And the process of spraying chemicals and waxes on "fresh" produce is not something I want to think about either. Almost everything we eat, even "fresh" food is processed quite a bit these days.

And I just can't possibly give up the brown rice California rolls from my favorite sushi place! Way too yummy! And I could think of a lot worse things to eat!

Hi,

The current word from the official nutritionist is still the same:

The sugar is necessary for preserving the product. This is a very small amount and should not affect your progress on SBD. It is fine to use imitation crab meat as a protein source.

Be healthy!
