Hi ladies, I recently bought the SBD book after finding out I am prediabetic/insulin resistant. I really hate the way I look and have needed to do something about my weight for a bit now. I am starting phase 1 today, but just trying to get together a grocery list is a struggle right now. I'm a very picky eater and don't like a variety of foods. I do not like cheese or beans. Any ideas on what I can do to substitute? I do like cream cheese but (without looking at the book) I don't think thats a good choice?

Is this diet not for me?

The SBD is for everyone. It teaches you to eat whole nutritious foods. You do not need beans or cheese - most people eat them because they taste good and are more like a treat to them (and beans are a good fiber source). So if they are not a treat for you - don't eat them!

You might then, need to eat more veggies to make up for the calories in the beans and cheese that you are not eating. I would suggest you replace them with veggies rather than the more calorie dense nuts. You might also consider having a bit more lean protein too - but do have the veggies to replace the fiber in the beans.

SB is really just about eating a balanced diet. You may need to stretch yourself to try new types of foods that you don't normally like (or think you don't like). You need to be ready to try to change.

Best of luck to you!

Lisa.

There are no foods that are "required" on South Beach (other than veggies - but even then, there is no ONE certain veggie that is required) People who are lactose intolerant can do South Beach. People with wheat sensitivities can do South Beach. Vegetarians can do South Beach. People with allergies to nuts or eggs can do South Beach. All South Beach really is:

chosing lean protein, plenty of veggies, non-fat dairy, heart healthy fats, fruits and whole grains and staying away from the refined sugars, saturated fats and white starches.

The specific types of these items you chose is up to you. Cheese is certainly not necessary! In fact it may work in your favor to not like it as too much cheese can be a diet buster. Beans are an EXTREMELY healthy food - but - certainly not essential. They are an easy way to get lots of fiber, and they help you feel full longer. There are many, many options for beans (hummus and other dips, split pea soup, lentil soup, other soups, chili, refried beans in a burrito, etc.) You may find something you like. If not - no big deal, just make sure to get plenty of fiber from other sources.
