I need ideas for a short outa' town trip

I'm leaving for Little Rock (I live in Dallas) tomorrow around noontime, and will be gone until Thursday evening when I drive home.

I'll be driving, and won't have access to a refrigerator all day Wed when I'm on the road or Wednesday night.

I need ideas for dinner Wednesday, snack Wed night, and b-fast Thursday morning - all things that don't need to be refrigerated.

Also, what to eat Thursday night. I can bring my food to the office fridge on Thursday for Thursday night on the road driving home, but we normally eat out together on Thursday afternoon after case planning. So, mainly I need Wed evening, and Thursday morning.

Any ideas for me? I don't want this to be a tempting time to go astray and really want to plan ahead to keep that from happening.

I am not sure if I can help you, because it sounds like you want to focus on items that do not require a refrigerator. But, I just had a long weekend (with quite a bit of driving) and here are some ideas based on my experience.

We stayed at a Residence Inn, which has a fridge in every room and a microwave in the community eating area. I packed a small insulated bag (about 2-3X larger than a lunch bag) and packed a SB frozen meal, a pre-made salad, yogurt, cheese sticks, nuts, and some of my favorite veggies for snacks. I also brought hard boiled eggs and SF Jello. Many hotels will provide you with a dorm size refrigerator with a small additional charge. If not, perhaps you could bring a small cooler and replenish the ice in the morning. Again, I am not sure if any of this would even be an option for you.

Another idea is to find out where the grocery stores and convenience stores are around the area that you will be staying. It should be pretty easy to find via Google or mapquest. For example, we have something called a WAWA in the PA area, which has things like individual cheese sticks, hard boiled eggs, milk, salads, and for Phase 2 people -- fruit. In addition, most of the grocery stores carry premade salads, and of course, the SB Phase 1 lunches. If you were on Phase 2 -- you could also opt for the breakfast and/or lunch wraps, or the cereal. My guess is that you already know that it would be a bit easier for you if you were on Phase 2! Also, you might even find a diner near the hotel that you will be staying at (assuming that you will be at a hotel, because you said that you wouldn't have access to a refrigerator).

If you are really committed to all of this, you could even invest in something that my DH bought for me a few years ago. It is a cooler that does not use ice -- it plugs in to either an outlet or a car adapter. When I use that cooler, I also use frozen ice packs and line the bottom of the cooler with it in the event that I need to stop the car for an extended period of time and don't have any place to "plug in".

Good Luck...let me know if any of these suggestions help!

Hey, thanks Prauly. The suggestions really do help. I think what I'm going to do is go ahead and bring my cooler and just pack it with ice so I've got stuff that will keep for the day or so. That way I don't have to worry about anything going bad and I'll also have more of a variety.

I'm thinking I'll pack up with salad stuff, hb eggs, leftovers from the night before (that I don't mind eating cold :) , and maybe get a Subway salad on the way home Thursday night if all else fails. I just need to make sure to plan and pack ahead of time.

Thanks for the input!

No problem...any time. I recently moved to PA and have family in CT and in MA -- so it is a regular issue for me! I must say, that it is much easier now that I am on Phase 2.

You can make a trail mix of pistachios and almonds (when you reach P2 you can add dried apricots to the mix).

We lived in Glen Mills for 1 year. I used to love to go in and treat myself once a week to a cup of coffee and mix in tons of the coffee flavors! The one by us used to have 10 to 15 choices and you could mix and match freely. They also had a lot of choices for sandwiches since they were made to order. You just use the touch screen to order what you want and voila!

Along with you guys, I absolutely LOVE the WAWA. I'm in Delaware and probably couldn't live without it. It was the talk of the town when they finallyl built one of the new large stores with the cheapest gas around. Their coffee selection is also the best I've seen.

That is the one sure-fire stop for a quick bit that is sure to be SB friendly. Cheesesticks, apples, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, chili. The possibilites are endless. And you can get any sandwich on wheat bread. I wouldn't have survived without my local WAWA! Actually, that's what I got in my Easter basket. WAWA gift certificates.
