My friend who just had gastric bypass is drinking high protein shakes, and she gave me a sample of the chocolate powder to try. Is this OK for on P1? There is no sugar, and it has about 23g. of protein per serving. I can mix it with milk or water.

I just wanted to know because eggs every day for breakfast is getting a little bit old!

Thanks!

Here is the official answer from the South Beach Diet online nutritionist:

Protein powders can be used but they do not supply all the nutrients found in whole foods. We would much rather that our members choose whole, real foods rather than protein powders. However, you may use them if you wish. I do have to caution you that heaping on tablespoons of protein powder can lead to weight gain. The South Beach Diet meal plan includes adequate amounts of protein. In healthy individuals adding large amounts of protein to the diet does not provide a benefit. A balanced meal plan based on whole foods is always the best choice.
