Why am I hungry all the time?

I'm on day 5 of phase 1 and I swear I've been hungry every day all day. I'm not eating too little, I"m getting all my veggies (including beans), all my dairy, my nuts, everything, I just can't figure out why I'm so hungry. I've never been like this before. I haven't been exercising this week because my energy has been pretty low so it can't be that. Any ideas?

Hi,

I felt the same way when I first started South Beach. I realized I wasn't getting enough protein. I've never been a huge carb eater anyway so I knew it wasn't that for me. Add in more protein and eat "good" things until you are full. If you love salads make a HUGE one with every meal etc. Once I added more protein my energy came back.

Good luck! Joy

Can you post what you've been eating and when? When you're hungry you should definitely eat -- some protein, maybe a few slices of turkey or a piece of cheese, should help quell the hunger pangs. Hunger isn't a bad thing that you should try to ignore, it's your body's natural way of processing fuel. And if you were overeating a lot before, it will take some time to adjust. Also try having a big glass of water or some Crystal Light -- sometimes thirst can be masked by hunger.

Here is a typical day this week (the dinners have varied but breakfast and lunch and snacks have pretty much been the same except for a couple of exceptions:

Breakfast: 2 eggs, 1 cup 1% milk, 6 oz. v8 eaten around 7
Snack 1: 15 almonds eaten around 9:30
Lunch: Salad w/ chicken, chickpeas, spinach and vinagrette
Jello with 2 tbs cool whip free
Have lunch at 12
Snack 2: Peanut butter and celery eaten around 3
Dinner: Chicken stir fry w/ asparagus, brocolli, and cauliflower eaten around 6:30
Snack 3: Ricotta cream stuff in the SBD book eaten around 8:30

This seems like a good amount of food to me. I wasnt' eating more than this before the diet (I was on weight watchers for a long time before starting this diet, I was lookign for something different). I've just never been hungry all day long before.

Is it an option to skip Ph. 1 and go directly to Ph. 2?

Hi and welcome!

From the looks of your sample menu, you're on the right track. If you are hungy, eat more. It's fine in phase 1. To start, I would add some turkey bacon or canadian bacon with your breakfast and

Oh yeah, you can totally go into Phase 2 if you want. I never did Phase 1, just started at Phase 2. How much weight do you want to lose? Phase 1 is really just to get rid of cravings, but if you don't have a lot to lose, I'd just skip it.

Your meals look good, maybe just add another V-8 to your a.m. or p.m. snack and/or another glass of milk. Have you tried the Reese's smoothie? 1 cup milk, 1 Tbl. natural peanut butter, 1 Tbl. unsweetened cocoa powder, 2-3 packets of Sweet & Low or whatever you use, a few ice cubes, mix in blender -- really delicious.

Good luck!

Yeah I thought I was eating too many nuts lol. I think I'll cut the almonds out, I can't live without my PB.

Thanks for your great suggestions cl-karezz!

I started this week at 165 and I'm 5'6. I'd like to lose 30 lbs. I'm probably about 15 lbs overweight but I know I'll feel better at 130-135 so that's what I'm shooting for.

That Reese's smoothie recipe sounds so good! I love smoothies and I'm actually kind of in withdrawl right now since I can't have fruit (I used to have fruit smoothies every morning for breakfast) so I'm going to try that tonight.

I'm going to try and tough out the rest of the week and add in a couple more snacks but I don't think I'm goign to do a whole 2 weeks on phase 1.

Thanks so much!

I might also suggest that you are not really hungry but are actually having cravings. I know that when I did phase 1 I felt hungry even after I had a big meal. It was my body saying "where are the carbs??" It took me about 11 days on phase 1 to get over that. It was important for me to do since it set me up for a successful phase 2.

Best of luck,

Lisa.

Not to sound like a cow... but

Eat more chicken.

LOL Chik-fil-a ad... for anyone who didn't recognize it.

Anyway, more protein in your diet, a chunk of chicken, a serving of natural peanut butter will REALLY help with hunger.

My snacks were a low fat part skim cheese stick, w/ a peanut butter slathered piece of deli turkey meat wrapped around it and BOY HOWDY were they good!!! Gave me a little boost!
