I'm hungry!

I'm new here. I'm on day three of phase one of South Beach. For the past year and a half my sisters and I have all been focusing on losing weight/eating healthy/getting in shape. I successfully lost 30 pounds and got to my healthy "weight range" (I don't worry about a specific target weight, just a range of about five pounds that's healthy for me) over the course of six months or so, then maintained that loss for a year. But this year I started getting lazy--I realized that I could pretty much eat what I wanted as long as I kept up my exercise routine. So I ate JUNK, and my weight still stayed in the range I liked, but closer to the top end of the range.

Then in late June I went on vacation and gained almost five pounds. When I came back, I realized I was in trouble--it's July, and that means that I can't go to the gym (I go during my lunch breaks, but during July my DD is in a morning day camp so I spend my lunch breaks ferrying her home) and DH's work schedule (he works nights, so we tag-team parent) means I can't even get out to run from home (which I hate anyway in July!).

So no regular exercise and five pounds over my healthy range, ten pounds from the lowest point of that range. So I'm trying South Beach to, I hope, kick start some weight loss, get off the junk diet I've been on, and prevent further weight gain during a month that I can't exercise regularly.

It's a great time of year for South Beach. The grill is just waiting to be used, and every morning I go out to the garden and pick lettuce, green beans and peppers to eat. The tomatoes will be ripe in a few days. So lots of fresh veggies easily and cheaply available.

But here's my problem--so far this diet has been like a Chinese food diet for me. I realize I'm just on day three, but every single day I've eaten a meal until I'm no longer hungry and an hour later I'm ravenous. The sort of hungry where your stomach rumbles so loudly your coworkers can hear it. I'm eating snacks regularly, so it's not as if I'm starving myself between meals. My meals involve a normal portion of protein and lots of some kind of vegetable. I'm eating string cheese or nuts for my snacks, usually along with pepper slices (which have been my usual snacks for the past year and a half). I know I'm getting enough calories (when first losing weight I just reduced calories and exercised, which was remarkably effective for me. There were no foods that were not allowed, and I was never hungry except very late in the day.).

Is this normal? Will this go away? I don't know how much longer I can last when I feel so hungry all the time!

You should never be hungry on any phase of south beach. Always eat when you are hungry from the food to enjoy list. Maybe you could post a day of what you normally eat. Are you getting at least 4.5 cups of veggies (1/2 cup of beans or legumes), 2-3 servings of dairy, and lean protein?

If this continues and it makes it hard for you to stick with, maybe you should move to phase two. That would be better than you giving up. That's the real weight loss phase anyways.

Good luck!

Yup, I'm getting all of that in my diet. Yesterday, for example, was two scrambled eggs with sauteed tomatoes and green peppers and four ounces of milk for breakfast; 15 almonds for snack; leftover grilled pork with two cups of salad and vinagrette dressing for lunch, string cheese and pepper slices (dipped in more dressing) for my afternoon snack; another snack when I got home because I was hungry--more string cheese and a tablespoon of pine nuts (yum, btw--I've never had pine nuts just on their own before!); tacos for dinner made with lean ground beef, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce and wrapped in lettuce leaves, then one of the ricotta-based desserts after dinner. Oh, and a glass of milk with dinner as well. I also had two cups of coffee in the morning, and lots of water throughout the day.

This *should* be enough, but my stomach says otherwise, and I'm concerned about overdoing it with snacky foods. I'm going to give it a couple more days before I make any changes.

Hi Sarah and welcome!

You're definately on the right track and your menu looks fine. As Katy said, you should eat if you are hungry. Your body is detoxing from the junk. If you hang in there, and keep eating, I bet that you'll be feeling more satisfied in another day or two.

Okaaaaaay, people make fun of me for this - but it WORKS!!!

And you should never be hungry - eat when you are hungry - you are fueling your metabolism!!

Okay.... get some cheese sticks (Kroger/WM has some that are 2.5 g fat and 60 calories each), natural peanut butter and some thin sliced deli turkey meat.

Slather the deli meat w/ peanut butter (I prefer crunchy) and then roll the cheese stick up in it. YUMMY and filling. ;-)

I won't laugh because enough people make fun of me for my addiction to peanut butter and pickles! Really, it's a very yummy combination.

That said, peanut butter is a big no-no in my diet these days. DD has a peanut allergy and I've given her two reactions when I tried to clandestinely sneak PB when I was at work. Now I just avoid the stuff entirely!

Updating however--my hunger went away by day four. Go figure. And then life conspired to make sticking to phase one very difficult--my sister's 30th birthday party followed by a three day work conference. I actually did pretty well, although I did indulge a couple of times. Sorry, but I consider birthday cake a sacred food. It doesn't seem to have stopped my progress, though.

OTOH, now I'm suffering from extreme thirst. It's hot, but this is extreme even for that. I'm cranking through a lot of water each day (I'm up to 80 ounces so far today) so I shouldn't be dehydrated, so I don't know what's up.

Hi Sarah,

Extreme thirst should be checked by a doctor.

No, definitely not diabetic. Or rather, I have none of the other symptoms and none of the risk factors and the last time I was at the doctor (about 10 months ago?) everything checked out fine.

But I just googled it and apparently extreme thirst is a not uncommon thing to suffer during the first phase of SB, so I'll just keep chugging water and not worry about it!
