Dunkin Donuts Coffee

For any of those Dunkin Donuts coffee addicts out there, How have you modified your coffee orders at DD? I usually have extra cream and sugar with regular sized coffee. Now in Day 2, I am missing my coffee and ready to go out to get one but want to keep strictly to the diet.

Boy, do I know what you're going through! When I first started this woe, I went by the book, both literally & figuratively. I read the book & followed it to a tee. I even ate the sample menus in the book, exactly as they were for a couple days. I had major headaches, actually migraines, from coffee (caffeine) withdrawl. Finally, after suffering, I added back in coffee. I tried every variation of artificial sweetner & every variation of creamer out there. Absolutely nothing compared to the taste I was used to although the headaches did go away. So, what I did, was make a *personal* choice. I compromised where I could. Throughout the rest of my sbd journey, and still to this day, I buy a medium d&d coffee (twice a day) with regular cream & 2 splenda. I used to use regular sugar pre-sbd so I did switch to splenda, which now to me is just as tasty as regular sugar. Try as I may, I could not give up the cream. Its not legal in one bit but I firmly believe you have to make personal choices in order for this to work for you. As silly as it sounds, if I couldn't have my coffee taste somewhat like it used to, then I would have thrown in the towel. It even sounds silly as I type those words but its simply the truth. I was willing to change all other aspects of my diet but not the coffee/creamer part.
I'm not endorsing "bending the rules" but if its that important to you, you need to do what will make this work. Try the other non-fat creamers out there. You may actually like them. Splenda is great although you will probably notice a slight difference at first. Who knows, maybe the splenda & non-fat cream will be acceptable for you?? Give it a chance before you decide.
HTH!

I order, and always have on SBD, a medium iced with extra milk and 2 splenda. If caffeine ends up being a craving trigger for you, then switch to decaf. Overall, a caffinated beverage is a far better treat than a cookie..;)

43 lost, 40 to go
I hear ya! I am on Day Two and am going by the book literally, recipes and all! I have some slight modifications as to not spike the family grocery bill too high buying different kinds of fish, meat we don't normally buy. Anyway, one thing I knew going into this was that I couldn't give up coffee close to the way I like it, that has been for a long time my one indulgence. That is not to say I wasn't willing to make some modifications to adhere more closely to guidelines of the diet. However, I wasn't willing to compromise my coffee tasting somewhat like it used to and I don't know if decaf coffee with nonfat milk and sugar substitute is going to cut it for me. I totally agree with what you said. While I may not stop the diet, I would just take whatever consequences come from straying from the diet on the coffee/creamer issue. I usually have one medium sized cup every couple of days, usually when I go out with my kiddos running an errand or something. (I am a stay at home Mom).
Just today, I tried a small coffee with cream and 1 splenda and I think I could live with that. I think I am going to experiment a little each time I go with different combinations of nonfat/regular cream and regular/artificial sugar.
Thanks,
Jennifer
You don't need to give up coffee. You can have up to 2 caffeinated drinks per day.
It sounds like you may have an original edition of the book and at the time,
Thanks for the clarification Karen. I may have to refer to that link from time to time as I am just starting the diet (Day two)!

Oh I am a serious Dunkin addict. But I have reformed somewhat. I used to be worse when I was working! But when I do go, I usually get either medium hot or medium iced (depending on the weather) regular flavor with milk and 2 equal. I can't do splenda. I use ff half and half at home, so having it with milk isn't too much different. I only have it maybe 3 times a week at most. I used to love getting the lattes and I think the latte lite is still SB legal as long as them don't flavor it and use the skim milk and splenda or equal. The caramel latte used to be my favorite. But no more!

Hi there!
I used to drink Dunkin Donuts Coffee at my previous company. The head of our coffee club used to buy the coffee grounds and brew it fresh daily. YUM! I never actually ordered it at Dunkin Donuts (no location close to me) so not sure if there is a great difference or not. But I actually liked it better than Starbucks coffee. I am still in search of the best coffee that I can make at home (with reasonable cost) now so I have been experimenting with different creamer, sweetener.
I used to put A LOT of regular creamer in my coffee. I tried the suggestion from this board to use FF evaporated milk. It is much creamier than FF milk. Plus, I can use less sweetener with the evaporated milk since it has richer taste. Fat Free half and half is also good, but it typically costs more than evaporated milk and I think you can only have 2 tablespoons a day. So the evaporated is better budget wise and can count towards your daily dairy.
I agree that you should go ahead and have your splurge if it will help you stick with the SBD, but let me know if you like the fat free evaporated milk if you are willing to try it.
Mom_mosley1 - Thanks for the advice about creamer. I can relate to putting lots of creamer in my coffee. I usually like it only when it is a very light beige color and don't like it when I order it with extra cream and it is too dark so you can see I have some adjusting to do! Anyway, believe it or not, I don't have a coffeemaker at home. It's just a special treat for me when I leave the house (an expensive one, at that) but I only have it 3-5 times a week and no more than once a day.
I like DD better than Starbucks too but then again I haven't had anything besides just their regular coffee in a really long time - used to go crazy over their Pumpkin Spice and Eggnog Latte around the holidays though - I am betting those aren't SBD friendly :)
I like the evaporated milk idea. I'll have to remember that if I get a coffee maker. Will have to try the fat free milk when I go to DD and see what I can live with.
Tcranky1 - I am a serious addict too. When I was working full-time I used to get a reg coffee every day before work. (Sometimes, even when waiting in that long DD drive thru line made me late for work :( )Now, as a stay at home mom, I have it up to five times a week. I have heard the Latte Lites advertised. Maybe that's a possibility every once in a while too. KWYM about the caramel lattes - I used to really like the coffee coolatas at one time. There is a reason they are so filling - more than double the calories of your regular coffee.
Thanks,
Jen
