Skipping Phase 1?
20
Sun, 10-28-2007 - 9:10am

I have been reading all the information on here about the diet, and have the SBD Cookbook which has a certain amount of diet details in the front. I am tempted to try this, but don't eat meat. I feel that Phase 1 would be just too boring to do with just fish and eggs, and am tempted to try the Phase 2 start instead as speed of weight lossis less important to me than eating healthily. But I'd love to have some feedback from those who also started this way. Is there anyone here who did that and can offer some advice?

Thanks

Hi Lily,

Welcome!

We've had a few members start in phase 2 and I'm sure they'll show up and let you know how it worked for them.

Hi! Welcome to the board!!!

I started in phase 1 b/c I had a serious sugar addiction (and 6 months into phase 2 still battle cravings occasionally) to the point of having Insulin Resistance Syndrome/Borderline Type 2 diabetes and was 75-90 lbs overweight.

I wish I could have started in phase 2 and I think given that you don't eat meat that's an excellent idea. I've recently discovered the morningstar veggie patties on a whole wheat toasted english muffin is just about the best thing I've ever eaten!!!

Hi Lily,

According to Dr. Agatston and the South Beach Diet nutritionists, Phase 1 is optional.

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. I'm still reading it all up (on here and in the book), and I hope to soon be able to plan out a week's meals and then set a date to start.

OK. I have read the diet book, and the front chapters of the cookbook, and have been preliminary shopping. I found some Golden Vale Cheestrings. These are sold for children's lunch packs. They are the 'lite' version.

I think these are similar to what you advise for snacks. Could you please tell me if these are suitable?

They are made of 100% real cheese made with semi-skimmed milk and each one contains the equivalent of a glass of milk. Each

Thanks Cathy. You're a great help.

I'm slowly getting my head around all this.

I started in Phase 2 and I've gone from size 14s to size 8s, so it definitely worked for me. Like you, I wasn't worried about the speed of weight loss, just really wanted to become a healthy eater. I also wasn't a big sweets person, so I didn't feel the need to "detox". If I were you, I'd start out in Phase 2 with 1 fruit and 1 grain per day for a week, move on to 2 fruits & 2 grains per day for a week, then 3 fruits & 3 grains for a week. See if you can stay on track or if you feel compelled to cheat in any way. You'll know if it feels right and will work, or if you need the stricter Phase 1 to jump start things. Good luck and let us know what we can do to help!

Thanks for that endorsement, and the idea of adding the extras gradually. I had sort of planned to do two weeks with one carb, one fruit, but will now do as you suggest.

Thanks.
