All yogurt -— and all milk products -— contain lactose, a naturally-occurring sugar that’s low on the glycemic index. What we always recommend looking at is added sugars in foods. Also, on the South Beach Diet we don't count carb grams.
No matter what phase you’re in, the best yogurt choice is plain, fat-free yogurt has the sugars(carbs) in the yogurt that are natural and part of what yogurt is! Feel free to add one to two teaspoons of sugar substitute, flavor the yogurt like a ricotta crème, or add a small amount of extract.
People in Phase 2 can also introduce artificially- sweetened, non-fat, flavored yogurt. Many yogurt companies add additional sugar to their flavored yogurt, so you’ll need to look for varieties that use a sugar substitute, such as Splenda. To find them, look for the words “light” or “lite”. Some familiar brands include Dannon Light n' fit, Yoplait and Blue Bunny. You’ll need to limit the amount of artificially sweetened, nonfat flavored yogurt you eat to 4-6 ounces daily. This is because numerous yogurt companies have reformulated this type of yogurt by adding high-fructose corn syrup, an ingredient that’s high on the glycemic index. If the light yogurt you find does not contain high fructose corn syrup then there would be no need to limit it to 4 oz. daily.
It's perfect!
