Hi,

My DH and I are going to start South Beach for the first time starting January 1st.  I used to do a weight loss forum here when it was Parentsplace but then I got pregnant and am starting this journey (or battle) again.  I wanted to try something different and hopefully something that will make me see results quicker. I ordered the book but in the meantime, can someone answer a couple questions please?  The information page is awesome and I see the foods I need to eat.  Is that the same for a man or does my DH need to adjust his amounts?  Also, can you all tell me what you are eating for your meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner).

I thought for Jan. 1st, we could have for dinner black eyed peas and some lean pork.  That's about as far as I've gotten so far and could really use some ideas for a basic menu.   Vegetables for breakfast doesn't sound very good so I thought I'd get vegetable juice.   Or maybe a veggie omelet?

I would appreciate any help or ideas  you can give me.  Can't wait to see some results!!!

Welcome to the board!

Yes - usually men need bigger portions. There are a number of things on South Beach (such as the protein and veggie categories) that are unlimited. My dh always ate much bigger portions of these categories than I did. A person's minimum calorie requirement depends on their weight (along with other factors) But obviously a 200lbs guy needs more calories than a 115lb woman just to survive. So its fine if he up his portions of those things. For the best weight loss, he should stick within the limits on things like nuts, sweet treats, etc. because those are very calorie dense foods. But let him eat til he is satisfied on the lean meats and veggies.

Veggies for breakfast is optional. I can't do it, never have. Didn't hurt me a bit - still lost 67lbs and have maintained for 2 years never having a single veggie or veggie juice for breakfast because the thought grosses me out so much. That right there is the beauty of South Beach. It can be adapted to YOUR personal likes/dislikes and there is never a need to "force" yourself to do or eat something you don't want to. That is counter productive. So don't try to choke down veggies in the morning if you really don't want to. That could just cause you to get resentful and binge or give up. I still have no trouble getting in my 4.5 cups per day.

I'm just starting the SB as well, 1st day. I looked over the menus earlier this week and this morning I did scrambled eggs with diced chicken, and bell peppers. That way I'm getting some veggies in, without eating a true side of veggies in the AM. If I had diced them ahead, I could also have added onion, mushrooms and tomatoes. I agree, doesn't sound appetizing otherwise. Good luck!

Welcome Gardengirl!

That's a great way to get some veggies in.
