I have been reading the message board for awhile and think I'd like to give the SBD a shot. However, I see a dinner coming up with my family, a business meeting coming up. How do you not let these things sidetrack your success on SBD? Do I just wait until these things are over to start, but if I do that I could be waiting for a long time. There is always something that comes up. How do you work this diet in the "real" world. Thanks for your help.

The "real" world is always going to be there.
South Beach is a lifestyle - so there is no point in waiting, that will be never. I know this is how I am going to eat for the next 50 years. I've been eating this way for 3 years already, so I have had to go to many, many events.
How do I handle it? I eat before I go, pick out only what I can eat (if there is NOTHING SBD-friendly, I just have something to drink and say I'm not hungry) Then I make sure I have a special meal (something that is my favorite or especially indulgent, but still SBD-friendly) waiting at home. I've never really been concerned about hurting anyone else's feelings. If a friend of mine smokes in front of me, I don't feel obligated to join in out of politeness, so why should I join in poisoning my body with food, just to feel polite?
My dh has to go to catered meetings all the time and he just says "no, thanks, ate before I came" He also lies and throws out the diabetic or allergy card a lot if he is really worried about offending anyone at a meeting. He just says "dr. doesn't want me eating ______ for awhile"
You have to eat and make choices for YOU - not to make other people happy.

MichaelAnn - that
I think everyone is nervous before starting a new way of eating and thinking about food.
