Can I continue Phase 1 longer?

Hi, I have been on Phase 1 for a full two weeks and have been so good (no cheating at all).  I have lost 12 pounds so far.  My question is, is it safe to stay on Phase 1 longer than the initial 2 weeks?

Thanks everyone!

Nope! You had a rocking great phase one (I too lost 12.5 lbs!!) and it's tempting but you need to move on to phase 2!!!

Phase one is to detox and you seem to have done that successfully... are you still having any sugar cravings??

I started phase 2 very slowly, introducing one fruit and one grain the first week each day then 2 fruit two grain and then 3 fruit 3 grain.

Good luck!!!

Hmm,
You made me think - when you asked "are you still craving sugar?".

Im just finishing up 2 weeks, and well, still kind of crave it, but the big difference is I have resisted it, or can resist it much easier now. If I'm still craving it, does that mean I wasn't as successful as I could have been?

Thanks!

"Cravings" is a funny word. The South Beach definition is not what most of us think of. It doesn't mean "desire" or "longing". They define a craving as a drop in blood sugar that occurs too soon after eating a high glycemic resulting in feelings of hunger when you should still feel full. For example, some people will eat a huge bowl of pasta and then feel hungry 1hr later. That is what they call a "craving".

After 3 years and 67lbs I will still "desire" certain foods. If I see a commercial for something or smell something baking in a store. But I can resist that - as you said - because I am full, satisfied and I don't have those swings in blood sugar that cause us to feel STARVED and break down and give in.

I like how you define that.

As much as love South Beach - they are guilty of a little bit of "marketing" with that whole cravings thing. I really wish they used a different word because the way they put it makes it sounds like you will wake up on day 14 of phase 1 and hate the taste of all forbidden foods. It just kinds of clears the fog, and gives us the physical tools we need to make better decisions.

Don't get me wrong, my tastes HAVE changed, but that didn't happen by the end of phase 1. That took years of not eating those things. They brought me a regular coke by mistake at a restaurant a few weeks and I literally gagged and sprayed it all over the table. Dh thought it was quite funny, but I was SO embarrassed. But the taste was just horrible. And it felt so "thick" in my mouth - blech. And I used to have a 2-liter-a-day coke habit.

Well,
Thank you both for your input...I feel much better. I will share today that I was quite hungry after coming out of the grocery store to get cat food, and normally I would have bee-lined it for the pizza shop for a quick slice (veggie, whole wheat crust is the usual, so not THAT bad, but still..). However, I totally resisted. I MISSED it and drove by the door really slowly..but I did it.

SO, I guess its about having a better handle on things and really changing your habits too.

Keep on keepin on!
