a few P1 questions...

a few questions:

1.  Does non-fat cottage cheese count as dairy?  I saw somewhere that cheese does not count as dairy, but I'm guessing that cottage cheese does count as dairy, as well as cream cheese-- is that right?  So what I am using for my 2 cups of dairy is non-fat plain yogurt, non-fat milk (or, rice milk --enriched), half & half for my coffee, and then couting non fat/lowfat cheese as "just" a protein but not counted in the 2 c. of dairy.

2.  I tried making the peanut butter smoothie that I found the recipe for here on the board, but it came out SO watery, like milk more or less.  Even with ice in it.  I tried it again and reduced the milk but same deal.  I made one for my ds but with a banana in it and it was thick due to the banana, but obviously I cannot use bananas at this point...So what do you do to get it thicker/more smoothie consistency?  More ice?  More yogurt?  Less yogurt?  Maybe part of it is that I'm using rice milk instead of cows milk...not sure.

3.  Do you always have to have a "carb" (veggie for phase 1) along with your snack to make it complete?  I just can't think of anything appetizing to have with say above smoothie.  Or would the smoothie be OK on its own?  I need to search the board for good veggie snack ideas...Its weird, when I eat veggies alone, I don't mind the taste but for some reason they don't sit well in my stomach--before I had my son I could eat them and did eat them but since then they almost make me feel nauseas!  I don't know if that is just because my body isn't used to them or what.

OK I think thats it for now.  Thank you!!

The peanut butter smoothie is watery with out the addition of yogurt or something like a banana or fruit.

Cream cheese actually doesn't count as either protien or dairy on SBD.

I'm not sure what kind of half-and-half you have for your coffee (we don't use the full fat kind) - here's the list of good creamers for your coffee:

I personally find smoothies much more suited to phase 2 since you can add fruit to thicken them. Next time add a FROZEN banana to your son's - it makes it really creamy and you don't have to add as much ice (which waters down the flavor)

I keep a stash of frozen banana, berries, and mango in the freezer for smoothies at all times - we have them pretty much every day. Also, I usually throw in some Benefiber powder or flax seed, you can't taste it and its a great way for them to get some extra nutrition!

Also- wanted to add to make sure to check your rice milk for added sugar. Unless its "unsweetened", it probably contains some type of sugar (most have some type of "cane syrup" which is still sugar) I'm not familiar with the brands of rice milk available, but we use soy at our house and there is only one flavored brand on the market that does not use added sugar - Soy Slender from WestSoy.

thank you! I learned yesterday that the creamer I was using (coffee mate sugar free, is not apporopriate, so I've switched to the rice milk instead...)

OK so let me check my rice milk... Its original flavor organic enriched rice dream... It has 10g of sugar out of 23g total carbohydrates (0 fiber--whats the other 13 carbs? lol) 2.5g fat and its all mono and polyunsaturated...

ingredients are: water, organic brown rice, canola oil, tricalcium phosphate, sea salt, vit A, vit D2, Vit B12... thats it. So no added sugar.

I have this because its what my son drinks and I normally don't drink milk, but I think tonight I'm going to pick up some of the westsoy soy slim stuff, and some non fat regular milk, just incase, and it has more protein.
