I am on day 11 of Phase 1. I have not cheated even once and am still badly craving carb type foods. My newest want is a big soft pretzel. So why after 11 days am I still craving carbs non stop?

Well...a few things could be going on here.

I have my food journal posted on the journal board and I believe I am eating enough. I only have 3 more days till I move to P2 on Monday so I will just wait it out till then and hope it passes with the addition of some grains

Phase 1 is to get rid of PHYSICAL cravings...the ones brought on by blood sugar swings.

Journaling is great, but the downside is that we can't truly tell how much you're eating.

I hate that South Beach uses the word "craving". When they say craving they are not talking about DESIRE. They are talking about the physical process of eating something high carb, your blood sugar spikes, then drops rapidly leaving you feeling hungry. An example is eating a bowl of pasta that SHOULD have been enough food and calories to "fill you up", but in an hour you feel hungry again. So its technically defined as feeling hungry less than 2 hours after eating a full meal.

Now WANTING the taste of a certain food is not a SBD craving. Phase 1 does not rid you of liking the taste of something, or rid you of issues like emotional eating, comfort foods, etc. Those things take time. Even after 3 years I will still salivate walking by Cinnabon in the mall - darn that smell makes me crazy. It still just takes will power of knowing what that crap does inside my body that keeps me walking.

The longer you are on South Beach other things will provide motivation to assist you in overcoming desire-based cravings. Your tastes do change, sweet stuff is way too strong for me now and doesn't even taste good. And once your body is "clean" for awhile, when you do eat junk it makes a lot of people sick - I get VERY sick, so its not worth it. And then the weight loss itself provides motivation. No food is worth going back to where I was, so that makes it easier to pass up those cinnamon rolls.

I would definitely move on to phase 2, it will be much easier to find substitutes for the foods you are craving.

Thanks, I see what you mean and I agree that I am just still wanting some of the foods items (soft pretzels, french fries) that I love and have eaten for so long. They are a want not a need.

I am surprised I have stuck with P1 so well. I said me feeling better then I have in a long time and seeing some weight come off has really pushed me to keep on task.

Thanks for all the great advice !!
