Phase 1'ers .... how's it going?

Just wondering how you were feeling. Is everyone still on board? Laurie, how did the next couple of days go for you?

I am doing great today! Woke up feeling somehow different this morning. Lighter on my feet (not in a weight loss way, but in an energy way) and clearer thinking. Not grumpy about having to get up. No cravings of any kind today. I also already don't feel like I need as much food. Two nights in a row, dinner has completely satisfied me, and last night I didn't even bother with my sweet treat. I knew I still kind of felt full and knew good food was available tomorrow (weird thing about me. I tend to eat as though there might not be good stuff next time I want it. Werid)

Question for anyone: What's the difference between an emotional craving/need to eat comforting food, and a TRUE physical craving? I am thinking I might've only had one real craving the other day, which I fixed up with a starbucks drink. How do I know when I am physically detoxed/craving free? I have a feeling I'll fight the other kind for a long time. Though if today's an indication, maybe not so long.

Question for anyone: What's the difference between an emotional craving/need to eat comforting food, and a TRUE physical craving?

Sometimes it's hard to differentiate between hunger and cravings. Here is what one of the Daily Dishes says about: Cravings or Hunger?

Published 3/8/04) "The South Beach Diet™ encourages you to resist cravings but also to respond to hunger. Sometimes, it's not always easy to tell which is which. Here are guidelines for telling the difference:

"Hunger is the feeling you get when you experience a normal and gradual drop in blood sugar about four or five hours after a meal. It's your body's way of telling you that you're past due for your next meal."

"Cravings, on the other hand, happen within a couple of hours after your last meal. They are usually brought on as a result of reactive hypoglycemia, a process where your brain detects too-low blood sugar and your body starts to crave foods that will provide the fastest fix—usually a high-GI carbohydrate. Reactive hypoglycemia is a vicious cycle. Once you eat a high-GI carb to curb your cravings, you've set yourself up for another quick drop in blood sugar—which will, in turn, make you crave more carbs."

"It may not always be possible to tell whether you are experiencing cravings or legitimate hunger. That is why it's best to eat consistent, regular meals and to enjoy healthy snacks throughout the day. If you don't give your body the chance to be hungry, you won't be at risk of experiencing cravings."

Don't mistake walking through the mall and smelling chocolate chip cookies and reacting to the smell by wanting to eat one as a 'craving'. It smells good so it's natural to think "um, that smells really good, I'd really like to eat one" as a 'craving'. This would not be a 'craving'. Sometimes when we 'deprive' ourselves of food we respond by wanting to eat the food even more. Often the answer is to allow yourself a special treat occasionally; to enjoy the special treat, and then just get back to the program guidelines at the next meal or snack. This keeps you in charge of your eating; you are making decisions about eating a treat so you don't feel 'guilty' or 'bad' because you enjoyed this small indulgence.

I just moved onto P2 today. But P1 went great and I saw a BIG difference in the way I feel. I feel so in control. I feel more energetic, have clearer thinking, have more patience, and i feel so motivated for more. Its so amazing what eating right can do for us. Makes no sense to get off track and go back to eating junk and therefore feeling like junk. Being healthy is addicting!

I also wanted to say to Cathy.........Thank you for the great post, that is super information. I will be sending that to a friend of mine who I have been trying to explain the way eating the wrong foods can cause you to keep eating the worng foods and so on and so forth. Thanks!

I know how you feel. Awesome on moving into Phase 2. I can't imagine how great I'll feel by then, if I feel this much more clear already.

I second that about Cathy's post. I totally forgot this information, and it's VERY helpful. Thanks Cathy!

Hi Penelope! Welcome back. I did EXACTLY the same thing you did 4 years ago. Except I only lost 12 lbs. I have no idea why I didn't stick to the plan. I have no memory of it. I think life just happened to me. That might possibly have been right before a pregnancy I had? I think that may be it.

At any rate, I did like you and just gained it back and sat there and watched it happen. Why

Ellen, I dropped 3.5 lbs after 2 days. And you know what? Water weight or not, I was THRILLED! Sometimes, we need to see an encouaging "bump down" on the scale. Even if it's "just water weight" it was something that needed to start moving.

Glad you're here to stay! I am the same way. And it helps to have all of the encouragement here too. And I have a DH who's most definitely proud of me. I share how I am feeling and if any weight drops off and he's my own personal cheerleader.

I am with you. Definitely eat and drink every bit that you're allowed to. It really does help. I ate a TON of broccoli last night. And I was tired of it by the end of the bowl (even though it tasted great) but...I never was hungry again, filling up on good stuff like that.

We'll keep each other on the beach!

Hi Becky,

Thanks for the words of encouragement and it's always good to hear that you're not alone in this wonderful boat!!

I also not only want the lbs to go away again...but mostly...I just felt so much better.
