Can I have a Chai latte w/ veggie milk?

My favourite coffee shop has started making cappuccinos and lattes with a product called ‘Tayo’ (I think), which is a low-carb, non-fat milk made from veggies; I tried a bit and it’s actually very similar to soy milk, except a bit thinner in texture. They were too busy last time I went in to get the nutritional value table, but the guy there did mention that one of the veggies it’s made from is potatoes (which makes me wonder how it’s low-carb?). Has anyone heard of this product? Can I still have my Chai latte on Phase 2 if I use soy or skim milk or does this product sound better?

Are you referring to the brand "Tazo"? I went to their website and I didn't see any low-carb option. Check out www.tazo.com yourself and confirm if this is the brand you are talking about. The thing with Chai tea is that it is loaded with sugar. In the past I've bought two different brands and they both have lots of sugar in it. When you get a chance to get a hold of the product check out the nutritional label: look out for ingredients such as sugar (of course), starch, corn syrup.

I love chai tea and will start looking for an SBD friendly version of it. If you find one please share.

Hi inina,

I agree with the last post - that it's the sugar that makes chai latte non-sbd friendly, not the milk. Also, remember that low-carb is not necessarily sbd friendly either. We don't count carbs, we look at ingredients and we stay away from added sugars and starches.

I am disappointed about chai latte too! I would love to know if anyone knows of a sugar free version that does not contain ingredients we want to avoid!

Thanks Cathy! Worth a try with some sugar free vanilla syrup and fat free half and half!

Actually, it's not Tazo - I think they use Oregon Chai for the tea part, but the veggie milk is definitely called 'Tayo'. i couldn't find it on the net either but i went in today to verify the name. Everyone who replied to this thread was, sadly, correct about the sugar in Chai lattes, but if you can find a good Indian grocery shop they usually sell the Chai masala, or spices, and then you can boil it on the stove with sf syrup or splenda and milk. Need to talk DH into buying an espresso machine so i can froth the milk.

I will try to get the nutritional value of the Tayo milk for you guys and will definitely share if I find a sf Chai...thanks everyone for replying!

oh, oh, oh - you don't need an espresso machine for froth.

Oh, I found it online!

http://www.tayofoods.com/win/flash/index.html

I was looking for tayo milk but then changes to tayo dairy drink and that's when it popped up. Anyways, the nutritional facts are there. It doesn't look good: potato starch as a source of cabs and fructose as a sweetener. Besides, skim milk is allowed in all phases. So you should be fine with plain ol' milk.

Good luck!

Great frother Cathy!

I would love to have frothed milk in my coffee, but I am too lazy to get out my espresso machine! I was never very good at getting it to work anyway.

Thanks for the tip!
