YIKES --- Salmon Patties

I finally got around to attempting to make salmon patties. I opened the can of salmon (something I have never bought before) and YIKES - there were ugly bones and skin in it! And, it smelled like cat food! I threw it away. Obviously I bought the wrong kind. This was Chicken of the Sea Pink Salmon. I must admit I was rather confused when staring at all the varieties in the store. It sounds like a great recipe - especially with the curry sauce. Any tips on better salmon - or using fresh salmon????

It shouldn't smell fishy, but the bones and stuff are part of canned salmon. Ummm. I don't know what to tell you. I think its a good source of calcium..? Since its canned its all been cooked like the dickens already anyway. I often take the skin looking part off, but I don't think that's actually skin but the layer of fat close to the skin and I think fish fat is supposed to be good for you too (omega 6?). Try it again it is truly an awesome recipe! Even without the sauce.

I'm so hooked on salmon patties right now, my husband put me on a fish oil supplement thinking I may have been deficient! (awwww he cares) He would like to see at least 7 days between recipe repeats! Okay! His turn to cook! (my turn to run the office? I don't think so!)

I don't know......

The bones were large, there was alot of fat and skin.

REALLY disgusting.

I think I will try fresh salmon - at least then I know what I am getting!

When I make these, I sometimes use canned tuna - no bones or anything! I typically just cook for me, sometimes BF (he's not a big fish fan!) so one can is enough, but for a family, maybe a couple of the big cans would work. Good luck, this is a GREAT recipe! I have it at least once a week!!!

Hi, you just need to look for cans that say skinless and boneless. Bumblebee makes a good one. Granted not quite as yummy as fresh salmon, but definately not as scary as what you opened. This kind looks a lot like a can of tuna when you open it. Hope this helps.

I totally understand!! lol... I had to stay away from canned salmon for close to a year because I chomped down on a HUGE vertabre (SO GROSS!!).

BUT, I did decide to give it another try and found skinless/boneless canned salmon... and it is GREAT. Look for it next time your out. I try to use it now instead of tuna because it's better for you (higher in Omega-3, lower in Mercury).

I need to try the salmon patty recipe, where is it?
