Japanese Salad

Hi everyone,

I am new to SBD and am day 3 into phase 1. I have this fabulous cabbage salad recipe that I love. I will show the modified version for SBD. Even if you don't like cabbage (which I don't normally) this salad is great! And it's a great way to get in those pesky veggies.

** since I am new at SBD- please tell me if my modified Japanese Salad is okay ingredient wise and okay to eat. **

Original recipe

1 small head of purple cabbage (cut finely)
2 green onions (chopped)
1 1/2 cups of toasted almonds
1/2 cup sesame seeds
1 cup sunflower seeds (all seeds go in a non-stick pan, no oil required and toast)
1 pck. of ichybum noodles (that's a brand name, but you can use any of the flat noodle soup packages - I use regular flavour or vegetable.

Dressing

3/4 cup salad oil (either canola or olive - and I use maybe 1/2 cup - you could use less)
5 tbsp of sugar
3 tbsp of white vinegar
noodle seasonings

So to modify for phase one - skip the noodles altogether, with all the crunchyness from the seeds, you don't need them.
Subsitute Splenda for the sugar.
Now it looks like alot of seeds/nuts, but it makes lots of servings- so 1/2 cup serving with your meal is really not that many seeds.

For phase 2 you could include the noodles if you wanted to. You just crunch them up - you don't cook the noodles. and inlcude them in the salad.

Hi all,

I'm bumping this because I want to know if this salad is "legal" or not since I'm a total newbie to SBD, and I won't make it if has stuff in it that it shouldn't.

Thanks!

Hi Natasha,

The only thing that bothers me is that one of the dressing ingredients is the noodle seasoning.

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for mentioning it. I've now taken a look at the package...mmmm the ingredient list goes like this: salt, monosodium glutamate (MSG), Sugar, Lactose......maltodextrin, onion powder....

I'VE BEEN HAD!!!! Doh!

I will omit the seasonings and the noodles for phase one, and then I might have the noodles in phase two occasionally, but I am not using those "seasonings" again. They should just write something more like, "add poison for your body" instead of seasonings.

One more word of caution - are those noodles Ramen type noodles by any chance?

Glad I left the package next to the computer!

Indeed they are Ramen type noodles. And it appears as though they are fried first since they have palm oil listed as one of the ingredients. Okay, then, I guess no noodles for phase 2!

However, I still think the salad will taste great without because of the crunchiness of the seeds/nuts.

I don't think I'll be having that often either, but it is a nice way to get cabbage in my diet. I don't think I can eat cabbage any other way.

Thanks for your insight...

I eat baked ramen occasionally. Some things just don't taste right if you use a different kind of noodle. It's called Chef Woo. But by occasionally I mean 1 a month or so.
