This must have been in Glamour before my subscription started, but the March issue had some stuff about it. Supposedly the success rates are incredible! Anyway, it looks nice and healthy (white meat only), as well as rather yummy, so we'll see what happens. I thought it was a good recipe as well as an interesting phenomenon... If anyone sees results, please let us all know!

Engagement Chicken

1 whole chicken (approx. 3 lbs (1.4 kg).)
2 medium lemons
1/2 cup (125 ml) fresh lemon juice
Kosher or sea salt
Ground black pepper

Preparation:
1. Place rack in upper third of oven and preheat to 400 degrees (200 C.).
2. Remove giblets.
3. Wash chicken inside and out with cold water.
4. Let chicken drain, cavity down, in a colander until it reaches room temperature (about 15 minutes).
5. Pat dry with paper towels.
6. Pour lemon juice all over the chicken (inside and out).
7. Season with salt and pepper.
8. Prick the whole lemons three times with a fork and place deep inside the cavity.
9. Place the bird breast-side down on a rack in a roasting pan.
10. Lower heat to 350 degrees (175 C.) and bake uncovered for 15 minutes.
11. Remove from oven and turn bird breast-side up (use wooden spoons).
12. Return it to the oven for 35 minutes more.
13. To make sure it's done, insert a meat thermometer in the thigh; it should read 180 degrees (80 C.), or juices should run clear when pricked with a fork.
14. Continue baking if necessary.
15. Let chicken cool for a few minutes before carving.
16. Serve with juices.

ok, i didn't take a step back from my last message to realize that i didn't explain.

the whole thing behind engagement chicken is that if you make it for a guy, he will propose very shortly afterwards. glamour had a lot of stuff about it, and when i looked it up on the internet, a lot of radio station websites around the country had stuff about it with people saying it had worked for them.

obviously it's not a controlled experiment, but the results of a lot of women being suddenly engaged after cooking this seem a bit uncanny. bf and i have been talking about getting engaged within the next year (probably this summer), so we'll see if it speeds up the results. i'm probably cooking this either this wednesday or this coming weekend.
