Oatmeal Ideas

I have become a big fan of Old Fashion Oatmeal. I make it about 3-4 days a week. I have come up with a couple of variations I would like to share and to ask you to share any other variations.

First for a frame of referance, I use 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of oatmeal - cooked for six minutes. I always add a lot of Cinnamon and a dash of salt. I most often top it with a couple of sprays of I Can't Believe it's not Butter (Sometimes splenda, sometimes not.)

My variations so far:

Blue Berries - I add about a 1/4 of frozen blue berries to the oatmeal. Put them in about half way through the cooking to make sure they get warm and your oatmeal is hot enough. (Make sure you get the no sugar added berries. I got some rasberries once that had sugar added.)

Peanut Butter - I put about a tablespoon of peanut butter and mix it in with my oatmeal. I use either Simply Jiff or natural.

Chocolate - Sounds strange, but I put about 1 or 1-1/2 teaspoons of coco powder, I add while the water is boiling. I love it, I sometimes will mix the peanut butter in also, it is like a reeses pieces.

Any other ideas?

I was also going to suggest cooking it in milk. I like it MUCH better that way - very creamy and "rich". I like to add a little Smart Balance and top with some sugar-free maple syrup - gives it that "Maple and Brown Sugar" flavor (that was my favorite flavor of the instant type) I've also put in sugar-free strawberry jam for a "Strawberries and Cream" flavor (my second favorite instant flavor LOL!)

Thank you for the milk idea, I am always afraid of scorching the milk, but I guess I will just have to go for it and learn not to.

Love the idea of the sugar free strawberry jelly. The maple sounds pretty good to. Which brand do you use? I have not found one I really like yet.

One Another Note:

I think I could get addicted to this board!!! Why didn't I find you when I first started the South Beach Lifestyle? I really needed the help a year ago!!!

I love oatmeal too ;-) I just started over on Ph 1 - I CANNOT wait 'til Ph 2 so I can eat my oats!

I like to chop a little apple and cook it up in my oats with cinnimon and splenda. A few chopped walnuts are nice too. I sometimes add almond extract and few chopped almonds. Cinnimon, vanilla and splenda is a always a good combo too, tastes like an oatmeal cookie to me ;-)

I can't wait to try it with the cocoa powder, sounds yummy!

Love these ideas!!!! I eat so much oatmeal I sometimes feel like a horse. LOLOL I like to toast pecans -spray with butter spray and put in the toaster oven for a couple of min. then add to the oatmeal with cinnamon-I cook it with the milk-not big on drinking the milk so do whatever I have to. I once tried putting a 1/2 banana-didn't taste too great to me-hot banana maybe? Now if it was banana bread-that's a different story! :o)

I make mine for 3 minutes in the microwave, too. We have shallow, flat bowls and it has never boiled over at home. I use water, but almost always add a splash of milk on top when it's done.

Thanks for all the great ideas! I love oatmeal, too. My favorite addition is peanut butter. I also like to chop up an apple and put it in the dry oatmeal and cook it altogether. With a bit of cinammon and Splenda it tastes better than the apples 'n' cinammon preflavored kind.

Another thing I have tried that is good is daVinci syrup. So far gingerbread, hazelnut, french vanilla, and vanilla are good.

Great Idea with the flavored syrup! Got to try that one!

One thing I forgot to add: I always put a tablespoon of ground flax seed in my oatmeal. Great extra fiber and it adds omega 3s (I think it is 3, it might be 6).
