Since giving up bread, we've learned that anything we used to eat in a sandwich can be put in our salads (see 4/4th Daily dish)...  I'm wondering, since our salads have become so creative, what's your favorite way to eat them?  Please share (answer one or all):

Hi Susan,

I'm a salad freak so this question is right up my alley!

Your:

Favorite salad combination:

I love pear slices and blue cheese crumbled in my salad. I also make my own dressing for this: 1 lg. pear (peeled, cored, chopped), 2 TBSP. white wine vinegar, 1 TBSP. olive oil, 1/2 tsp. freshly ground pepper, 1/4 tsp. salt-- blend until smooth and drizzle over salad. YUM! I also love the smoked chicken salad with raspberry balsamic vinaigrette that's in the SBD cookbook (pg. 118). Oh, and salmon on greens with BV dressing is divine!.. And mozzerella and tomato slices with basil and BV... So many good combos!

Most unusual salad combo:

Tuna salad and white bean. It's good though.

Salad you order out most:

Cobb salad, hold the bacon.

Biggest surprise (didn't think you would like it) salad:

Chili on salad. The first time I read about that on this board, I thought, "Ewwwwww", but it's actually really good and filling!

Salad combination you plan to try soon:

Hmmm... not sure!

Do you have any preparation tips?

Chop, chop, chop! The more you have prepared, the more likely you'll eat a yummy salad! I used to just buy the bagged salad and slap some store-bought dressing on it and be so bored with the whole salad idea. Now, I chop and prepare everything in advance and I love to make my own dressings and experiment with new ones, so I buy bagged salad and add everything I want on it and have enough for several salads. Makes it much more interesting and so much yummier!

Great question, Susan!

Great poll question! I look forward to reading everyone's answers!

favorite salad combination: I like anything that I can add some meat to. I don't feel satisfied with a standard "cold" salad so I like to add warm chicken, shrimp, beef, or whatever to it. I also try to keep the tomato. mozzarella, basil salad mix (from the SBD book) handy as a good salad topper or snack - I add bermuda onion for extra flavor. I also keep homemade salsa on hand to top my salad with - it takes the place of dressing.

Most unusual salad combo: Strawberries and spinach lettuce salad with a dressing made from sugar, olive oil, red wine vinegar, sesame seeds, and poppy seeds. Sounded very odd to me but tastes amazing. There is a lot of sugar in the recipe I got so I modified it with Splenda. It also tastes great with blackberries, raspberries, or mandarin oranges.

Salad you order out most: I tend to go for Caesar with grilled chicken or shrimp on it (no croutons). I also like taco salads but you have to work with them to modify it - I get mine in a bowl (not a tortilla bowl) with warm salsa, guacomole, shredded cheese, light sour cream (just a dollop), black olives, and cilantro. I usually get grilled chickn on top. VERY filling and tastes divine!

Biggest surprise (didn't think you would like it) salad: this would have to be the strawberry spinach salad mentioned earlier.

Salad combination you plan to try soon: I would like to try some salad with other kinds of fish besides tuna and shrimp. I want to eat more fish but I just don't care for the texture. Now that grilling weather is here, I am planning to try some grilled fish cut up on top of salads.

Do you have any preparation tips? Keep cooked, cut chicken on hand in the fridge to top salad with. You can throw it on there cold or microwave for a minute or two. I also keep homemade salsa and the mozzarella, tomato, basil salad mix on hand for a quick and easy salad topper.

Enjoy my fellow salad fans!

I absolutely love crab on top of my salad. We have a salad "station" in the cafeteria at the office where you tell the person what you want and he mixes it all up. I have a huge salad for lunch every day. There are always 2 meat options, and generally crab is one of them. Yesterday, I was so disappointed, because they had grouper instead of crab, and I just didn't think I could stomache that. I'm highly resistant to change - a creature of habit. LOL!

Anyway, if you're looking for another fish to try on your salad, I would definitely recommend crab with some sort of vinegarette dressing. I use something called Asian Sesame Ginger.

Lora if they grill the grouper it can be very delicious on top of salad.

I just have regular crab on top of my salad, not crab salad. It's delicious. I'll have to give the grouper a try if I see it again. I need to branch out in the area of seafood. I'm basically a cod and flounder type person. I did, however, buy some lobster stuffed salmon fillets yesterday that we're having for dinner tonight. They looked wonderful, and my 2 1/2 yo son LOVES salmon (go figure!), so I decided we'd give it a try.
