Is tofu expensive?

I live in a small west Texas town and haven't ever really even looked for tofu, but I am on a limited budget. Before I plan it into the menu I was wondering if it's expensive compared to meat like ground sirloin or cbicken breasts?

Thanks for any help, also if you have a great recipe using tofu I would love to have it just to try sometime.

Hi Allison,

I guess we don't have any tofu eaters here! I did some looking around on the web and found that you can buy a 14 oz. package of tofu for about $2.50. The recipes I saw use about one package, so that seems pretty reasonable.

I found a recipe for stir-fry tofu with brocolli rabe, but I had trouble pasting it here (www.foodtv.com has some great recipes). So here is the link:

Let us know if you try tofu and what you think!

If there are any Asian supermarkets nearby, tofu is MUCH cheaper than at the regular grocery store.

Although I cannot really tell you how much, I just buy it and never look at the price :)

Tofu is pretty common here in southern CA (LOTS of vegetarians in CA!) At my closest grocery store its $1.29 for a 16oz package, so that is about 65 cents per lb. Way less than chicken or beef!
But it probably varies depending on your area - its a high demand/quickly moving item here, so that may affect the price.
